Seahawks open season with 16-6 victory over Pilgrims

Henniker, N.H. – Eleven different Seahawks netted goals as visiting Salve Regina University topped the New England College Pilgrims 16-6 in women's lacrosse action Wednesday afternoon.

The game was the first off the season for both teams as the Seahawks improve to 1-0 and the Pilgrims fall to 0-1.

PILGRIM LEADERS

NEC was led by junior midfielder Allison Granata who finished with four goals and eight ground balls.  Kasondra Moniz finished with two goals and two assists.

SEAHAWK LEADERS

Abigail Tepper led the way for Salve Regina with three goals and four assists.  Salve Regina's Katie Kline finished with four goals and an assist, while Katherine Miele and Courtney Moulton each had a goal and an assist.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The two teams battled scoreless through the opening 10 minutes of play before the Seahawks would get two goals within a two minute span.  Salve would then get a goal by Kaitlin Gillespie at the 11:52 mark to go up 3-0 but NEC's Allison Granata would get the Pilgrims on the board just 20 seconds later cutting the lead to 3-1.  Salve Regina would close out the half with five unanswered goals, including two by Katie Kline.

The Seahawks would build their second half lead to as many as 10 with eight minutes left to play.  The Pilgrims would score two quick goals cutting the lead to 14-6 late but Salve Regina would get goals from Caroline Woessner and Lindsey Smith late cruising to the eventual 16-6 victory.

FINAL COMPARISONS

Salve Regina outshot NEC 37-18 on the afternoon. The Seahawks finished the game 18-of-22 in clear attempts, while the Pilgrims were 16-of-24

GOALTENDING

In goal for NEC was Mackenzie Meegan who finished the game with 13 saves.

Picking up the win in net for Salve Regina was Katie Jones who recorded nine saves.

WHAT'S NEXT

New England College will return to action on Saturday, March 5 when they host Regis College.

Salve Regina University will hit the field again on Wednesday, March 9 when they host non-conference opponent Plymouth State University.
