Curry overpowers Seahawks in CCC battle

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. – Curry used a five and six goal run in the first half of Tuesday afternoon's Commonwealth Coast Conference game to defeat the Salve Regina women's lacrosse team, 21-15, at the Seahawks home field. Salve Regina fell to 2-10 on the year and 0-6 in the CCC with the loss while Curry improved to 11-2 and 4-2 in the conference.

Sophomore Sarah Woods (East Lyme, Conn.) and junior Grace Kelly (Auburn, N.Y.) scored back-to-back goals just under 30 seconds of each other in the first 10 minutes of the first half to give Salve Regina a 3-2 lead before junior Haley Carey (New Milford, Conn.) kicked off a five-goal run for Curry with her second goal of the game. Senior Ana Bottary (Hull, Mass.) wrapped up the run with her third of the game with 15:49 showing to give Curry a 7-3 lead.

Junior Alyssa Corvi (Barrington, R.I.) stopped the run with her second of the game off a free position shot with 14:25 to play. Once again, however, Carey ignited a long run for the Colonels, this time with Curry scoring six in a row, including two from Bottary. Junior Deanna Monfredo (West Islip, N.Y.) with her second goal of the game with 2:40 left in the opening half.

Senior Jennifer Jones (Basking Ridge, N.J.) ending the scoring drought for Salve Regina with her first of the game off an assist from freshman Abigail Tepper (Foxboro, Mass.) with 1:41 left to cut the Colonels lead to 13-5 but Carey scored with just two seconds remaining to put the visitors back up by nine, 14-5.

Corvi's third goal of the game and a pair of goals from Jones in the first few minutes of the second half got the Seahawks within six, 14-8. Bottary and Carey answered with three goals between then to once again give Curry a nine-goal lead, 17-8. After Jones netted her fourth of the game, Curry sent two more home to take a 10-goal lead, 19-9 with 19:01 to play.

Sophomore Gina Tortorici (Deer Park, N.Y.) and Carey traded a pair of pair of goals before Salve Regina went on a three-goal spurt to cut the lead to 20-13, including a goal from Tortorici, Woods and a man-up goal from Kelly. After Carey's final goal of the game with 3:14 showing, freshman Lisa Pulie (Trumbull, Conn.) and Woods scored the game's final two goals to bring the score to its final, 21-15.

Corvi led the Seahawks with six points (3g, 3a) while Jones netted four goals. Senior netminder Josephine O'Reilly (Middletown, R.I.) made 15 saves in the loss for Salve Regina while Woods won 11 draw controls.

Bottary led all players with 10 points, including seven goals and three assists while Carey sent home a game-high eight goals.

Salve Regina returns to action when the Seahawks travel to the University of New England on Saturday, April 20. The opening draw is set for 4 p.m. The Colonels return to the turf on April 18 when they face non-conference opponent Framingham State at 6:30 p.m.
