Scots slip past Seahawks

WENHAM, MA— Freshman Jessie Castelline (Concord, Mass.) had a breakout performance for the Fighting Scots in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) women's lacrosse action today at Gordon's Brigham Athletic Complex, tallying 10 points off seven goals and three assists to lead her team to a commanding 21-8 Senior Day win over the visiting Seahawks of Salve Regina University.
 
The Scots improve to 9-2 overall, 4-2 in the CCC, while Salve drops to 2-9 overall and 0-5 in league.
 
Anna Blomberg (Jr./Simsbury, Conn.) also had a standout day for the Scots with five goals, while Jane Dietrich (Jr./West Hartford, Conn.) and Stephanie Fitzgerald (Jr./Groveland, Mass.) contributed three and two goals, respectively, and Alana Woods (Sr./Meford, Mass.), Brittany Hawkins (So./Hampstead, N.H.), Mindy Fowler (Sr./Winslow, Maine), and Krysti Leach (Gr./Naples, Maine) recorded one apiece. Fitzgerald also dished two assists and grabbed eight draw controls in the win, while Woods, Hawkins, Dietrich, and Bailey Grinnell (Fr./South Hamilton, Mass.) assisted one each. Keeper Danielle Maguire (Jr./Braintree, Mass.) stopped seven in the cage for Gordon and Julianne Kirkpatrick (So./Rochester, N.Y.) turned away one in 12 minutes of relief work.
 
Leading the Seahawks' offensive were Grace Kelly (Jr./Auburn, N.Y.), Jennifer Jones (Sr./Basking Ridge, N.J.), and Sarah Woods (So./East Lyme, Conn.) with two goals each, while Karley Malenczak (Jr./Sayville, N.Y.) and Gina Tortorici (So./Deer Park, N.Y.) rounded out the scoring with single tallies. Josephine O'Reilly (Jr./Middletown, R.I.) booked nine saves in the losing effort.
 
Salve took the first lead of the day when Tortorici netted her 19th of the year on a solo effort just a minute and a half into the action. Gordon responded with back-to-back tallies, one from Castelline and the other from Leach off a Castelline feed to take over the lead, 2-1. Salve's Woods then drove from the top of the 8m to record the equalizer at the 26:10 mark.
 
Over the course of the next 10 minutes, however, the Scots exploded offensively on a 9-1 run to build an 11-3 advantage over their guests roughly midway through the half. Kelly stopped that run with her second of the day and 13th of the season off a feed from Tortorici, and after the Scots surged again for three straight goals (one each from Blomberg, Castelline, and Hawkins), Malenczak and Woods closed out the half for the Seahawks with one goal apiece to make it a 14-6 game in favor of Gordon at the break.
 
The Seahawks opened the second with a goal from Jones less than a minute in to narrow the Scots' lead to seven, but they would get no closer on the day as Gordon went on another 7-1 run to pull away with the lead to the eventual 13-point win.
 
The Scots travel to Roger Williams University on Wednesday, April 17 for a CCC tilt beginning at 4 p.m. Salve will host the CCC's Curry on Tuesday, April 16 at 4:30 p.m.
