Bears roar past Seahawks, 19-9

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. - Junior Jenny Jones (Framingham, Mass.) scored seven goals and senior Shannon Manning (Framingham, Mass.) added five tallies to lead the Bridgewater State College women's lacrosse team to a 19-9 win over Salve Regina University in non-conference women's lacrosse action Tuesday evening at Gaudet Field in Middletown.

Junior Patricia Maloney (Walpole, Mass.) added two goals and two assists for the Bears, who improved to 2-1 on the season and 11-1 all-time against Salve Regina. Senior Sarah Baker (Summit, N.J.) tallied five times for the Seahawks, who slipped to 0-2.

The Bears raced out to a 7-1 lead behind a pair of goals from both Jones and Maloney and built a 9-3 halftime lead. The visitors outshot the Seahawks 17-14 in the first half, converted on three of their five free positions attempts, and collected 14 ground balls to nine for Salve Regina.

Bridgewater State scored the first three goals and four of the first five of the second half to grab a 13-4 with just under 23 minutes remaining, and the lead never dipped below seven goals. The Bears finished the contest outshooting SRU 38-30 and were effective in their own end, converting on 21 of their 24 clearing attempts.

"This is a very strong team with a lot of speed," said Salve Regina head coach Jen Eldridge. "We had a couple of breakdowns in transitions, but this was a good preparation game for our first league game against Colby-Sawyer."

Freshman Kelly Burke (Georgetown, Mass.) recorded a goal and two assists for the Seahawks while sophomore Sarah Livingston (Westford, Mass.) notched a pair of goals. Freshman Danielle Malconian (Belmont, Mass.) played a strong game defensively for the Seahawks, collecting four ground balls and three draw controls, and also caused a pair of turnovers.

For the Bears, senior Katie DeMaio (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) and sophomore Kristin White (Pelham, Mass.) each recorded a pair of goals while Jones tallied a team-high four ground balls.

The Seahawks host the Chargers this Saturday at Gaudet Field at 1 p.m. The Bears host Wellesley Thursday at 4 p.m.
