SEAHAWK WOMEN'S ICE HOCKEY RESULTS
Southern Maine 4, USalve Regina 1
St. George's Howard Rink - Middletown, R.I.
Saturday, February 3, 2018

Summary
MIDDLETOWN, R.I. - Southern Maine University scored four unanswered goals, three in the third period, to defeat the Salve Regina University women's ice hockey team 4-1 in New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) action Saturday night.

Series and Streaks
The Huskies own a 17-10-1 record in the all-time series and have won three in a row over the Seahawks.

Three Stars of the Game

  1. Southern Maine sophomore Whitney Padgett (Eden Prairie, Minn.) made 34 saves while allowing one goal to improve to 6-6-0 in net for the Huskies.
  2. Southern Maine freshman Rylie Binette (Milan, N.H.) scored a goal and handed out an assist.
  3. Southern Maine sophomore Katie Dolan (Dorchester, Mass.) scored what proved to be the game-winning goal on the powerplay at 8:37 of the third period.

Senior Moment
Prior to the game the Seahawks honored their three senior members - Erica Bonnette-Lykens (Swanton, Vt.), Megan Geier (Charleston, Vt.), and Meredith Peppes (Lincoln, R.I.) with a special pre-game ceremony.

Key Stat of the Game
Both teams were phenomenal on the penalty kill, which kept the game close. The Huskies held the Seahawks to 0-for-6 with the advantage while the Seahawks held Southern Maine to 1-for-7, including killing off a five minute major at the beginning of the third period. However, the lone powerplay tally was in favor of the Huskies, and it proved to be the deciding goal.

Turning Points
Katie Nolan scored on the powerplay to give the Huskies their first lead of the night, 2-1, with 11:23 remaining in the third period. The teams exchanged blows but it remained a one score game late into the period. A hooking minor gave the Seahawks a powerplay with 3:12 remaining, but they could not crack Whitney Padgett. Once the penalty had expired the Seahawks pulled the goalie to keep a man advantage on the ice. As the Seahawks set up the offense in the Huskies Zone, Ryie Binette charged out to the left point and poked the puck away into the neutral zone. She caught up to it herself and was able to streak down the ice and score on the empty net to seal the victory for the Huskies.

Quick Hits

  • Rebecca Hasting (Boulder, Colo.) got the scoring started with her first period goal. Megan Geier forced her way through two defenders and saucered a pass across to the left side to Hasting who back handed a shot past Padgett for the Seahawks only score of the night.
  • The Seahawks outshot the Huskies 35-29.
  • Jennifer O'Connell (Marstons Mills, Mass.) made 24 saves in net for the Seahawks and allowed two goals.

Next Up
Salve Regina (3-19-1, 2-10-0 NEHC) travels to New England College on February 9 (7 p.m.) for another NEHC matchup, while Southern Maine (8-14-1, 4-7-1 NEHC) hosts top seeded Norwich.
