Three-goal third lifts Seahawks over Bison

SEAHAWK WOMEN'S ICE HOCKEY RESULTS

Middletown, Rhode Island - St. George's
Saturday, February 11, 2017

Summary
The Salve Regina University women's ice hockey team scored three goals in the third period to break a 1-1 tie and defeat visiting Nichols College 4-1 in New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) action.

Series and Streaks
This was the 19th meeting between the teams. The Seahawks remain undefeated against the Bison, now holding a 18-0-1 record all-time in the series.

Three Stars of the Game
1 - Salve Regina senior Amanda Cronin (Medfield, Mass.) - scored her team leading 13th goal at 14:32 of the third to break a 1-1 tie.
2 - Salve Regina sophomore Taylor Chisholm (Discovery Bay, Calif.) - scored a shorthanded goal in the third period to give the Seahawks some breathing room.
3 - Salve Regina sophomore Jennifer O'Connell (Marstons Mills, Mass.) - made 20 saves and allowed just one goal for the fourth time this season.

Turning Point
The Seahawks were outshooting the Bison but were not scoring and the game remained tied 1-1 deep into the third period before Amanda Cronin broke through for the Seahawks. Cronin took a puck from neutral ice and pirouetted past a defended on the rightwing side then cut middle, squaring up the net and firing a shot that went straight to the back of the net to give the Seahawks the lead. The Bison drew a penalty shortly afterwards and looked to tie the game, but a bad pass out to the point gave Taylor Chisholm a breakaway chance for Salve Regina. Chisholm had been stuffed by Bison netminder Cassandra Goyette (Norton, Mass.) on a breakaway earlier in the game, but this time Chisholm was able to get Goyette moving just enough to sneak the puck past her left skate for the shorthanded goal, sealing the win for the Seahawks.

Quick Hits

  • Goyette finished the night with 53 saves in net for the Bison and allowed four goals for a .929 save percentage.
  • Erica Bonnette-Lykens (Swanton, Vt.) in the first period and Angela Augusta (Windham, N.H.) on the powerplay in the final seconds scored the other two goals for the Seahawks.
  • The lone Bison goal was scored by Laura Christie (Hudson, Mass.) who put home a shot in a scramble in front of the net, tying the game at 11:22 of the second period.
  • The Seahawks outshot the Bison 57-21 in the game.
  • Neither team was very successful on the powerplay. The Seahawks finished 1-for-5 while the Bison were held to 0-for-6 with the man advantage and gave up the shorthanded goal, the seventh by Bison opponents.
