MIDDLETOWN, R.I. - UMass Boston scored a goal in each period to defeat the Salve Regina University women's ice hockey team 3-1 in New England Hockey Conference action Friday night at St. George's.
Taking the Oath
Before the game sophomore Megan Geier (Glastonbury, Conn.) was was given a pre-game ceremony where she took her oath of enlistment and was sworn in as the newest member of the Cramer's Sabers Battalion, the local Army ROTC. Cadet Geier was sworn in my Lieutenant Colonel Ryan H. Whittmore and was joined by her family at center ice. Many of the Cramer's Sabers were in attendance to watch the game.
Series and Streaks
The Beacons now own a 13-12-1 record in the all-time series and snap a six game losing streak to the Seahawks.
Three Stars of the Game
1 – UMass Boston senior Kristina Bove (Medford, Mass.) scored her first goal of the season 27 seconds after the Seahawks had tied the game to give the Beacons the lead back.
2 – Umass Boston sophomore Rachel Myette (Pembroke, Mass.) made 18 saves in net for the Beacons
3 – Salve Regina senior Shelby Johnson (Sterling, Mass.) scored the only goal of the game for the Seahawks.
Key Stat of the Game
Both teams went 0-4 on the powerplay. The Seahawks even had a chance on a 5-on-3 in the third period but were unable to cut into the Beacons lead.
Turning Point
Shelby Johnson had just scored on a scramble in front of the Beacons net to tie the game and momentum was building for the Seahawks. But 27 seconds later in a similar situation Kristina Bove scored on a tap in shot off a rebound with a wide open net after Colleen Marcik (Madison, Conn.) had sprawled out to make an initial save on a shot from the slot.
