Cadets blank Seahawks 3-0
NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University women's ice hockey team picked up its fourth shutout in its last five games with a 3-0 blanking of Salve Regina University in New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) action on Friday at Kreitzberg Arena.
Norwich (5-2-0, 5-0-0 NEHC) scored three times in the second period to take control of the game after a scoreless first 20 minutes. With the win, the Cadets extended their league unbeaten streak to 38 straight, including five straight wins this season.
Sophomore Christine Bouchat-Bonin (St.-Bernard-De-Lacolle, Quebec) broke the ice, notching her first goal of the season and second of her career at the 3:26 mark of the second period with assist from Emily De Cock (Orillia, Ontario) and Adelle Murphy (Roseau, Minn.)
De Cock threw a puck towards the net from the right and Bouchat-Bonin poked the past Salve Regina goalie Colleen Marcik at the left post to make it 1-0 Norwich.
The Cadets added to their lead at the 6:20 mark with Murphy scoring her third goal of the season with a wrist shot from the top of the left faceoff circle. Murphy held the puck in at the blue line and then fired the puck through the arm and body of Marcik.
Norwich capped off its second-period surge with senior Rachel Bellio (Johnstown, Colo.) knocking the puck out of midair on the left doorstep of the crease for her first goal of the season. Freshman Jessica Piracini (Tewksbury, Mass.) took an initial shot that was tipped by freshman Robyn Foley (Goulds, Newfoundland and Labradror) in the slot.
Norwich outshot Salve Regina 31-19 for the game. Junior goalie Celeste Robert (Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec) stopped all 19 shots she faced to pick up her third shutout of the season. Robert improved to 4-1 on the season.
Marcik made 28 saves for Salve Regina to fall to 3-2 on the year.
Norwich will look to head into the Thanksgiving break with another victory as it takes on Manhattanville College at 1 p.m. in another NEHC matchup.
