NEWPORT, R.I. – The Salve Regina women's ice hockey team begins its 2014 campaign with back-to-back home games to usher in Beth McCann as the program's fourth head coach.

McCann brings her 15-year experience as a collegiate head coach (304-128-26; .660 winning percentage) to the reins of the Seahawk women's ice hockey program. McCann spent the past 15 years as the head coach of the University of Rhode Island's women's ice hockey team; a program she built from scratch.

Last season the Seahawks went 16-7-4 (10-5-1 ECAC) and made it to the semi-final round of the ECAC tournament. The Seahawks defeated Plymouth St., 5-0, in the quarterfinal round before being defeated by Castleton State, 5-1. Salve Regina will face one Division I school, Holy Cross, and two Division II schools in Saint Anselm and Saint Michael's as part of its conference schedule. Those three teams are eligible for weekly and end-of-season awards but not for post-season play.

Last season the Seahawks were 7-2-3 on home ice, which is where they will begin their season.

The Seahawks open at home against Holy Cross on November 7, 2014 (7:30 p.m.). The Seahawks have only defeated Holy Cross once, 3-1 on November 2, 2012 in Worcester, Mass. The Seahawks trail 1-25-1 all-time in the series with the Crusaders.

Salve Regina will be back in action the next night versus Nichols on November 8, 2014 (7:30 p.m.) as the Seahawks draw their first back-to-back on opening weekend. Last season the Seahawks won both contests with the Bison, 7-2 in Burrillville, R.I. and 8-2 in Middletown, R.I. The Seahawks have never lost to the Bison, having won 11 times, however the two teams have played to a tie once, 4-4 on February 11, 2012.

The Seahawks will play five of their first six games at home on the campus of St. George's. Those six games will all be against conference opponents.

The Seahawks first non-conference opponent will be Sunday November 30, 2014 (3 p.m.) against Connecticut College. A familiar non-conference opponent, the Seahawks have gone 3-6-2 against the Camels with Salve Regina winning three of the last five meetings. Last season the Seahawks defeated the Camels 3-2 in an overtime thriller thanks to two goals from senior defenseman Shannon Coleman (Chicago, Ill.). Coleman's first goal tied the game in the third period, while her second won the game for the Seahawks in overtime.

Salve Regina will play seven out of nine games at home in the fall semester before Christmas break, but only four homes game January through February.

The Seahawks will start 2015 with five straight road games before returning to Middletown, a stretch in which they will travel 959 miles in 13 days.

Salve Regina will travel to face Southern Maine (Jan. 10) then head south to face Trinity College (Jan. 13). The Seahawks will retrace their steps and head north once more to face the University of New England (Jan. 16) in Biddeford, Maine before returning to Connecticut again to face Wesleyan (Jan. 20) in a non-conference matchup.

The Seahawks conclude their road trip with a back-to-back. Salve Regina plays UMass Boston (Jan. 23) on the road, then hosts its first game of the New Year on January 24, 2015 (8 p.m.) against Plymouth State

The annual alumni game will precede the Seahawks last home game versus UMass Boston on Saturday February 7, 2014 (8 p.m.)

The Seahawks will then close out the regular season with four games on the road, all back-to-backs. Nichols (Feb. 13) then New England College (Feb. 14), and Saint Anselm (Feb. 20), then St. Michaels (Feb. 21).
