Coleman nets winner in OT

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. – With 2:16 to go in overtime, senior Shannon Coleman (Chicago, Ill.) sent the puck high into the top of the net to give the Salve Regina women's ice hockey team a 3-2 win over visiting Connecticut College in its second-straight overtime game and third in the last four contests.

Taking the rebound off a blocked shot, junior Sarah Markey (Ashland, Mass.) fed the puck to Coleman who positioned herself outside the crease with an open shot. Coleman sent the puck to the top right corner for her second goal of the game and gave the Seahawks their first win in overtime this season.

Freshman Ashley Antcill (Manchester, N.H.) got Connecticut College (1-2-2) on the board first with just seven seconds left in the Camels' second power play of the first period. Antcill got the puck just in front of the net off a pass from seniors Olivia Farrell (New York, N.Y.) and Courtney Dumont (Yarmouth, Maine) and chipped it in past the Seahawk goalie with 12:45 to play in the first period. On their first next power play, junior Leigh Getz (Clifton Park, N.Y.) got a pass from Dumont and launched the puck into the top shelf to give the Camels a 2-0 lead in the first period.

During a scrum in front of the next just before the midway point of the second period, sophomore Danielle Phalon (Stoneham, Mass.) got the puck from freshman Michelle Holmes (Goffstown, N.H.) and beat the Camel netmider to cut the lead in half, 2-1, with 12:06 to play in the second. Salve Regina freshman goalie Colleen Marcik (Madison, Conn.) kept the Camels off the board in the second, making a game-high 17 saves in the middle period.

Coleman tied the game for the Seahawks at the 5:59 mark as she got the puck from sophomore Shelby Johnson (Sterling, Mass.) and sent it high towards the net. The Camel goalie made a quick glove play on the puck, but it ricocheted off her glove into the net to tie the game at 2-2 in the third. Once again, Marcik was tested by the Camels and once again she was able to keep Connecticut College off the board, making six saves in the third.

Coleman's game-winner in overtime came off the Seahawks only shot on net in the extra period.

Marcik made 33 saves in the 62:44 of action while her counterpart, freshman Katherine Chester (Mendham, N.J.) made 23 saves in her first collegiate start. Chester had 13 saves in the third period alone.

Salve Regina returns to action when the Seahawks travel to Wesleyan on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. contest while the Camels  host Holy Cross on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
