Salve Regina held scoreless by St. Anselm, 4-0

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Goaltender Amy Zappen (Huntington Beach, Calif.) posted her second-straight shutout during Pink In The Rink weekend to lift the Saint Anselm College women's ice hockey program to a 4-0 victory over the Seahawks of Salve Regina University Saturday afternoon at Thomas F. Sullivan Arena.  With the victory, the Hawks improve to 15-6-0 overall on the season and to 10-5-0 within the ECAC Women's East.  The Seahawks fall to 9-8-4 overall on the year and to 5-6-3 within conference play.

Following a pre-game protocol penalty issued to Salve Regina, forward Kathryn Picarello (West Roxbury, Mass.) scored her fifth goal of the season only 28 seconds into the contest.  Defenseman Molly Corl (Georgetown, Mass.) fed the puck back to the top of the slot where it was gathered by defenseman Jacqueline Bouchie (Belmont, Mass.), who fired a shot on net that was kicked aside by Seahawks goaltender Rebecca Simmons (Averill Park, N.Y.).  The rebound spilled out to Picarello, who set up on the short side and powered home the rebound for the score.

Forward Kaitlin O'Brien (South Boston, Mass.) tallied her third goal of the season, unassisted, at 9:29 of the second period to increase the Hawks lead to two.  Streaking up ice, O'Brien carried the puck before it was intercepted by a Seahawks defender.  Losing her footing was the Seahawks defender, creating a wide open lane for O'Brien in the offensive zone.  Skating on net, O'Brien sniped the far side of the goal, eluding the grasp of Simmons for the strike.

Less than one minute later at 10:17, forward Michelle Lacombe (Delafield, Wisc.) scored her third goal of the season as Saint Anselm took the 3-0 lead.  With the Seahawks unable to clear the zone, forward Courtney Winters (Swampscott, Mass.) created a turnover that was gathered by Lacombe, who backhanded a shot on net between the hash marks.  Charging after the rebound, Lacombe was able to tip it home for the third Saint Anselm goal of the afternoon.

Forward Rosemarie Giarrusso (Royal Palm Beach, Fla.) scored her second goal in as many days to secure a 4-0 victory for the Hawks at 12:14 of the middle stanza.  From center ice, Corl fired the puck in behind Simmons trying to get a line change.  Skating unopposed up the left side of the ice, the lively rebound came out in front right to the stick of Giarrusso who shot short-side on Simmons for the score.

Zappen posted her 12th victory of the season and her fifth shutout of the year, turning aside all 16 shots on goal that she faced.  Simmons drew her sixth loss of the season, halting 22-of-26 shots on goal.

Saint Anselm was 1-for-4 on the power play.  Salve Regina was 0-for-5 with the extra skater.
