Scorpio, Beland named to All-CCC teams for women's basketball

NEWPORT, R.I. - On the eve of the postseason, Salve Regina University women's basketball has two honorees for all-conference selections in voting by the nine Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) head coaches - Second Team All-CCC Torie Scorpio (Cranston, R.I.) and Third Team All-CCC Kerri Beland (Attleboro, Mass.).

Seahawk head coach Cori Hughes guided her 2018-19 squad to the No. 6 seed in the upcoming league playoffs.

"Torie Scorpio once again did a tremendous job leading the Seahawks this season; her recognition is well-deserved," says Hughes. "I look forward to witnessing her continued improvement and maturation as she goes into her senior year in Newport, and once again leads us in 2019-2020."

"Kerri Beland is a smart, well-rounded, gifted player, and leader," continues Hughes. "I am pleased – but not surprised – that my coaching peers recognize this as well. She will be sorely missed on the hardwood and in the locker room next year."

This year both players are averaging double figures in points per game for their third and fourth seasons, respectively. Scorpio's averaging a career-best 12.8 ppg and has a dozen more 3-pointers (45) than her previous best (33, last season). Beland became the 14th Seahawk to reach 1,000-point milestone (Feb. 5) and has led the team in rebounding (6.9 rpg) this season.

Scorpio also leads the Seahawks with 95 assists. Beland has produced a team-best five double-doubles, and is a nominee for College Sports Information Directors Association (CoSIDA) Academic All-America® for the second consecutive year.

Beland earns her second-ever spot in the Third Team; Scorpio, the league's top rookie in 2016-17, earns her third straight nod to the Second Team.
