WENHAM, Mass. - Salve Regina University junior guard Torie Scorpio (Cranston, R.I.) scored a game-high 18 points to lead the Seahawks to a 55-45 win at Gordon College in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) women's basketball action at the Bennett Center. The Seahawks (10-14, 6-9 CCC) held a three-point lead after the first quarter (16-13) that was trimmed to one at the half (25-24), and enjoyed their biggest margin in the final quarter (22-15) for the final 10-point victory. The Scots (6-17, 3-11 CCC) were led by a double-double (17 points, 17 rebounds) from Sarah Gibbs (Elizabethtown, Pa.) while losing their third-straight game.
Salve Regina sweeps the season series and improves to 31-14 in the all-time series. The Seahawks have won 23 of the last 24 meetings.
Cori Hughes, head coach for the Seahawks, got minutes from nine different players including the return of senior forward Tara Burke (Londonderry, N.H.). Sophomore Mary Rorke (Norton, Mass.) and senior Liv Pierce (Tyngsboro, Mass.) both finished with nine points. Senior Kerri Beland (Attleboro, Mass.) added six points and four assists. Scorpio shared game-high five assists with Gordon's Abby Vampatella (Mansfield Center, Conn.).
Salve Regina next plays on Saturday, February 16, when it hosts Curry College on Senior Day for five Seahawks - Beland, Burke, Pierce, Lauryn Becker (Hanover, Mass.), and Mikayla Roderick (New Bedford, Mass.).
