NEWPORT, R.I. – No. 5 Salve Regina University women's basketball travels to Springfield, Mass., to face No. 4 Western New England University in Commonwealth Coast Conferene (CCC) Quarterfinals. The Seahawks and Golden Bears split in the league's regular-season games. These schools have met twice in CCC postseason play with each winning on its home court - most recently Western New England in 2016.

LAST TIME OUT
Salve Regina University women's basketball avenged an early season loss against Gordon College as the Seahawks defeated the Scots, 53-44, to close out the regular season and clinch the No. 5 seed in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) playoffs at the Rodgers Recreation Center. Kerri Beland (Attleboro, Mass.) led all players with 21 points on seven of 12 from the floor including four 3-pointers and three-for-three from the free throw line.

SEAHAWKS NOTES FROM THE NEST

  • Salve Regina last won the conference championship in 2012 as the No. 2 seed and hosted Endicott College in the title game (77-61).
  • Salve Regina has won the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) championship nine times (most of any league member past or present).
  • The Cori Hughes-led Seahawks have also won a title as the No. 5 seed; in 2009, then senior Allegra Lovoy carried a young squad to upset road wins over No. 4 Colby-Sawyer (68-56), No. 1 Nichols (60-45), and No. 2 Endicott (72-67). In the championship game, Lovoy connected on a three-quarter court shot before the halftime buzzer.
  • Tara Burke (Londonderry, N.H.) ranks third in the conference in field goal percentage (45.7%).
  • Two of the top three 3-point shooters will matchup in the quarterfinals - Golden Bear junior Meghan Gilhool (Montrose, Pa.) at 39.4% behind the arc and Seahawk sophomore Torie Scorpio (Cranston, R.I.) at 39.0% from long distance.

GOLDEN BEAR BLOG

  • Western New England has reached the finals each of the last two seasons, and three times overall since joining the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) in 2007-08. The Golden Bears have yet to win a CCC title in women's basketball.
  • Two of the top three 3-point shooters will matchup in the quarterfinals - Golden Bear junior Meghan Gilhool (Montrose, Pa.) at 39.4% behind the arc and Seahawk sophomore Torie Scorpio (Cranston, R.I.) at 39.0% from long distance.
  • Western New England had a season-long five-game win streak in January before losing three in a row (including at Salve Regina on Jan. 27). The Golden Bears also won four straight in February before finishing regular season with home loss to No. 1 seed and six-time defending champion University of New England.

INSIDE THE SERIES
The Golden Bears lead the all-time series, 13-9, and had won seven consecutive meetings until the Seahawks took a 65-62 decision in Newport last month.
