Summary
NEWPORT, R.I. - Salve Regina University junior Tara Burke (Londonderry, N.H.) led the Seahawks with 16 points as her women's basketball team defeated Western New England University, 65-62, in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action at the Rodgers Recreation Center on Saturday afternoon. Salve Regina led by five after the first quarter before the Golden Bears surged in the second, leading by as many as seven points, to go into intermission up by three, 36-33. The Seahawks had one of their best third quarters of the season, outscoring the visitors, 21-6, and taking a 12-point lead into the final period.

Series and Streaks
The Golden Bears lead the all-time series, 13-9, but the Seahawks end their win streak at seven games. The teams have split the regular-season series; Burke was the game-high scorer with 21 points (on nine of 12 from the floor) in a loss at Springfield last December 2.

Three Stars of the Game

  1. Western New England sophomore Emily Farrell (New Fairfield, Conn.) led all players with 18 points on six of nine from the floor and five of five from the line. She made her only 3-point attempt.
  2. Salve Regina junior Tara Burke (Londonderry, N.H.) led the Seahawks with 16 points and nine rebounds (game-high).
  3. Salve Regina senior Ally Esielionis (Shirley, Mass.) scored 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds.

Key Stat of the Game
Salve Regina nearly had twice as many rebounds as Western New England, 44-23. The Seahawks outscored the Golden Bears in the paint, 32-20.

Turning Point
Salve Regina outscored Western New England, 17-0, during a six and half minute stretch over the last part of the first half and first six minutes of the second half. After trailing by seven (36-29), the Seahawks led by asa many as 14 points (54-40) following back-to-back 3-pointers from sophomore Torie Scorpio (Cranston, R.I.) and junior Kerri Beland (Attleboro, Mass.)

  • Sophomore Meghan Orbann (East Hampton, Conn.) joined Farrell in double-digit scoring with 15 points.
  • Scorpio finished with 11 points including three 3-pointers.
  • The Golden Bears capitalized on 17 Seahawk turnovers, and outscored the hosts, 23-8, in points off turnovers.
  • Today was the second time this season the Seahawks had at least seven 3-pointers; Salve Regina allowed seven or more 3-pointers for the sixth time in 2017-18.
