Summary
NEWPORT, R.I. - Salve Regina University sophomore Torie Scorpio (Cranston, R.I.) scored a season-high and game-high 23 points to lead the Seahawks over the Gulls of Endicott College, 64-56, in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) women's basketball action at the Rodgers Recreation Center on Tuesday night. The visitors were led by senior Hannah Kiernan (Wenham, Mass.) with 21 points. Salve Regina (8-7, 5-4 CCC) outscored Endicott in each of the first three quarters, and withstood a rally by Endicott (7-7, 5-3 CCC) which had a 17-10 advantage in the final period.

Salve Regina leads the all-time series, 17-13, and has won the last two meetings. Endicott had won six of the last eight coming into tonight's game.

Three Stars of the Game

  1. Salve Regina sophomore Torie Scorpio (Cranston, R.I.) made eight of 11 shots tonight including three of five 3-point attempts. She went four of six from the free-throw line.
  2. Endicott senior Hannah Kiernan (Wenham, Mass.) led the Gulls with 21 points on nine of 17 from the floor and three of six from the free-throw line.
  3. Endicott freshman Cassandra Stapelfeld (Brookline, N.H.) scored the bulk of the Gulls' bench points (14 of 22) on five of nine from the floor including all three 3-pointers for Endicott.

Key Stat of the Game
Salve Regina senior Ally Esielionis (Shirley, Mass.) registered three blocked shots. Both teams scored 32 points in the paint, and each had 22 points from its bench.

Turning Point
Salve Regina led by one (21-20) after a 3-pointer from Cassandra Stapelfeld (Brookline, N.H.) before the Seahawks had a 7-0 run in the second quarter. Esielionis started the run with a blocked shot and a bucket at the other end; Scorpio had a 3-pointer and a layup.

  • Salve Regina outrebounded the visitors by one, 30-29.
  • Endicott scored the first six points of the game and Salve Regina did not get on the board until a pair of free throws by Esielionis at 7:15 in the first quarter.

  • Junior Mikayla Roderick (New Bedford, Mass.) came off the bench to provide seven points and solid ball handling.

Salve Regina (8-7, 5-4 CCC) hosts Wentworth Institute of Technology on Saturday, January 20 (1 p.m.), in the first of a league doubleheader. Endicott (7-7, 5-3 CCC) will be at Eastern Nazarene College on Thursday, January 18 (game rescheduled from two weeks ago).
