Summary
NEWPORT, R.I. - Salve Regina University juniors Kerri Beland (Attleboro, Mass.) and Tara Burke (Londonderry, N.H.) led the way with 17 and 16 points, respectively, as the Seahawks defeated the Wildcats of Penn College, 62-52, in non-league women's basketball action at the Rodgers Recreation Center. Beland added a career-high seven steals while seniors Mary Eden (South Kingstown, R.I.) and Ally Esielionis (Shirley, Mass.) had game highs in assists (six) and blocked shots (six), respectively.

Series and Streaks
The first-ever meeting between these two schools started a six-game home stretch for the Seahawks. Salve Regina (4-3) is now 3-0 at home this season and has a six-game win streak at Rodgers Recreation Center. The Wildcats (1-8), who won their 2017-18 season opener (55-48 against Thiel College), has lost eight consecutive games.

Three Stars of the Game

  1. Salve Regina junior Kerri Beland (Attleboro, Mass.) scored a game-high 17 points on six of 18 from the floor, four-for-four from the free-throw line, while adding five rebounds and a career-high seven steals.
  2. Penn College senior Gwendolyn Lavelle (Pocono Summit, Pa.) scored 14 points on four of nine field goals (three 3-pointers) and added seven rebounds, four assists, and three steals.
  3. Salve Regina junior Tara Burke (Georgetown, Mass.) scored 16 points on six of 13 from inside the paint, five rebounds, three assists, and three steals.

Key Stat of the Game
Salve Regina forced a season-high 36 turnovers from its opponent. Seahawks scored 24 points off turnovers, and also outscored the Wildcats in the paint, 28-12.

Turning Point
Lavelle's free throws at 1:01 of the first half gave Penn College its largest lead, 23-19. Salve Regina scored the final three points before intermission, and then the first six points (all from Burke) in the second half.

Quick Hits

  • Ericka Lepley (Lewistown, Pa.) and Jane Herman (Greencastle, Pa.) also scored in double digits for the Wildcats with 14 and 10 points, respectively.
  • Herman and Tori Wolfe (Dalmatia, Pa.) both had game-high eight rebounds.
