Curry 41, Salve Regina 40
Newport, R.I. - Rodgers Rec. Ctr.
Saturday, January 28, 2017

Summary
NEWPORT, R.I. - Freshman Erica Ulrich (Westminster, Mass.) scored just two baskets, but they both came in the fourth quarter during a 10-2 run as Curry College held on for a 41-40 victory in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) women's basketball action against Salve Regina University at the Rodgers Recreation Center.

Seahawk sophomore Kerri Beland (Attleboro, Mass.) led all players with 17 points in a losing effort.

Series and Streaks
The Colonels have won four of the last six meetings, and this is their first win ever at the Rodgers Recreation Center, and first triumph in Newport since 1996. Salve Regina, which had won 24 straight versus Curry in Newport, still leads the overall series, 47-19.

Three Stars of the Game

  1. Salve Regina sophomore guard Kerri Beland (Attleboro, Mass.) led all players with 17 points on seven of 15 from the floor. She added four rebounds, two assists, and three steals.
  2. Curry sophomore guard Molly Plunkett (Quincy, Mass.) led the Colonels with 14 points, including two 3-pointers, and grabbed six rebounds.
  3. Curry junior center Nicole Rice (Woburn, Mass.) led all players with 10 rebounds (all off the defensive glass), four blocked shots (and impacted countless others), while contributing six points.

Key Stat of the Game
Salve Regina scored the first basket of the game, a layup by Beland off a steal in the first minute, but did not score again until the second quarter. The Seahawks opened the second period with a 13-0 run and took the largest lead of the game (seven points, 15-8). Statwise, the Colonels could have won more comfortably except they missed 10 free throws (five of 15 from the charity stripe).

Turning Point
Tied at the beginning of the fourth quarter, Plunkett and Salve Regina senior forward Jillian Woodward (Orono, Maine) exchanged layups. Tara Burke's (Londonderry, N.H.) layup at 8:14 gave Salve Regina its last lead, 33-31. Ulrich's first jumper at 8:00 started a 10-2 run over 2:47 for Curry, with her 3-pointer at 5:13 matching the largest Colonel advantage (six points, 41-35). Burke (layup) and Beland (3-pointer) were the last baskets in the game over the final five minutes.

Quick Hits

  • Salve Regina junior Mary Eden (So. Kingstown) led her team with nine rebounds.
  • Reigning CCC rookie of the week Torie Scorpio (Cranston, R.I.) established a career-high in assists with eight, including five in the second half.
  • Score was tied seven times, and there were seven lead changes.

Quotes
"That first quarter hurt us obviously, scoring only two points, but we also had costly turnovers, and unforced ones, especially down the stretch. We've got to stop shooting ourselves in the foot." - Salve Regina head coach Cori Hughes
