Seahawks upend Roger Williams, 52-46

BRISTOL, R.I. - The Roger Williams University Women's Basketball team lost a close battle against TCCC rival Salve Regina University. The Seahawks led at half, 27-24, and continued to pressure the Hawks and took the game by a final of 52-46.

 

In the first half the two teams went back and forth with both RWU and Salve Regina having the lead, as there were two tie scores and five lead changes in the opening frame. The visitors were able to outshoot the Hawks, as they shot 40% in the first half compared to Roger Williams' 29%. In the final two and half minutes of the first half the Hawks went on a 7-1 run, cutting the lead to three heading into the second half.

 

The second half started in the Seahawks favor, as Meghan Averill (Newfields, N.H.) drained a three-pointer and started a 9-3 run by the visitors, giving them a nine point advantage which was the biggest of the game. The Hawks responded and tied the score at 36 going into the last ten minutes. The final ten minutes saw the Seahawks score only to see the Hawks respond. In the last minute and a half a layup by Lindsay Shorey (Ashland, Mass.) put Salve Regina up by five, and the Hawks were forced to foul to try and keep them within reach. Some key free throws by the visitors sealed the victory by a final score of 52-46.

 

Leading the way for the Hawks was Alexandria Lanieri (Port Jefferson, N.Y) who recorded 13 points, had two blocks, three steals, and a game-high 20 rebounds. Junior Kate Malenczak (Sayville, N.Y.) went 2-3 from behind the arc and added one field goal for a total of 8 points. She also chipped in with three rebounds, one assist and one steal. Paige Congdon (Westwood, Mass.) put in a strong performance, coming off the bench and putting up nine points as she went 4-5 from the field and 1-3 from the line. Congdon also recorded eight rebounds. For the visitors Erin Phillips (Morristown, N.J.) put up a game-high 18 points, had six steals and seven rebounds while Kimberly Horan (Webster, Mass.) recorded fourteen points and five rebounds, and went 2-5 from behind the three point arc.

 

With the win the Seahawks improve to 2-1 and 1-0 in the TCCC while the Hawks drop to 1-4 and 0-1 in the Conference. Next up for Salve Regina is an away game at Emerson on December 1st at 7:30 p.m. The Hawks will be a home game against Lasell on December 1st at 6:00 p.m.
