Garrigan pitches complete-game shutout to salvage split for Salve Regina

NEWPORT, R.I. (April 23, 2019) -- Seahawk sophomore Jaycee Garrigan (Uxbridge, Mass.) pitched a complete-game, two-hit shutout, 3-0, for Salve Regina University to salvage a split with visiting Eastern Connecticut State University in non-league softball action at Toppa Field. The Warriors (23-9) won the opener, 4-2, behind the complete-game, four-hitter for ECSU starter Morgan Bolduk (Vernon, Conn.) who improves to 10-0 on the season.

Salve Regina (19-18) plated three runs in the bottom of the sixth while Garrigan (2-2) did not allow a basehit after the third inning. Garrigan did not walk a batter and struck out five; the righty did hit three Warriors but stranded all six baserunners in seven innings.

Game One
Salve Regina starter Andi Nelson (Candia, N.H.) matched Bolduk with zeroes in the first two frames, and struck out the first two batters she faced in the third. But the top of the Warriors' order struck for three straight basehits with a triple from Alexis Tyrell (Torrington, Conn.), an RBI single from Jackie Lewis (Mystic, Conn.), and an RBI double from Brooke Matyasovsky (Orange, Conn.).

The Seahawks appeared to have tied the score at 2-2 in the bottom of the third with Amanda Riley (Barrington, N.H.) driving in Allie Gusmano (Orange, Conn.) for their first run, but Tyrell turned an RBI single from Nikki Vanelli (Quakertown, Pa.) into right field into a 9-3 force at first to end the inning.

The Warriors added an unearned run in the fifth before building a three-run lead, 4-1, in the top of the seventh with a two-out double by Sara Pisanelli (Walliongford, Conn.) and a pinch-hit RBI single by Kat Devolve (Plainfield, Conn.). After catcher Holly Kathios (Pelham, N.H.) led off the bottom of the seventh with a single to center field, Gusmano's grounder to the right side produced Salve Regina's second run. Nelson fell to 14-7 on the season after giving up a season-high 11 hits.

Game Two
The Seahawks collected six hits in the first three innings but stranded five baserunners. Lewis turned a double play to end the Salve Regina third inning. Tyrell reached on an error in the first but Garrigan stranded her at third base, the only Warrior runner to advance past second base against the Seahawk pitcher in Game Two.

ECSU starter Haleigh Cardello (Litchfield, N.H.) had retired eight straight Seahawks until Maddie Machado (Westport, Mass.) led off the sixth with a single. Vanelli sacrificed her to second and Kathios traded places with Machado with an RBI double to right field. Pinch runner Sam Farrell (Melrose, Mass.) scampered home on a wild pitch thrown by reliever Morgan Sanson (Thomaston, Conn.). Freshman Lauren Packer (Manchester, Conn.) delivered another insurance run with a two-out single to center field.

Salve Regina hosts Wentworth Institute of Technology on Saturday in the final regular-season doubleheader; Senior Day for four Seahawk captains - Kathios, Riley, Lindsey Florent (New Bedford, Mass.), and Megan Guest (Meriden, Conn.).
