Summary
NEWPORT, R.I. - Junior Lindsey Florent (New Bedford, Mass.) had five hits including two triples and a double in Salve Regina University's sweep of Mitchell College on Thursday at Toppa Field. Freshman Julia Coute (North Dighton, Mass.) picked up her first collegiate win by hurling five innings of one-hit shutout ball in the opener; a six-run fourth inning from her offense put the game out of reach. Her classmates Ashley D'Antuono (Seaford, N.Y.) and Courtney Latta (Lowell, Mass.) continued the Seahawks' shutout streak (17 innings over last four games) for another 8-0 victory.

Series and Streaks
Seahawks sweep their first ever meetings with the Mariners. Mitchell had won eight in a row, all at home and all in five innings by a margin of eight runs or greater. Salve Regina wins its fourth straight since returning from Florida.

Three Seahawk Stars of the Day

  1. Salve Regina junior Lindsey Florent (New Bedford, Mass.) collected five hits in the leadoff spot with two triples, one double, four runs scored and two runs batted in.
  2. Salve Regina freshman Jaycee Garrigan (Uxbridge, Mass.) went 3-for-3 at the plate with a double and triple in the opener and a pinch hit single in the nightcap; she scored two runs.
  3. Three Salve Regina freshmen pitchers - Julia Coute (North Dighton, Mass.), Ashley D'Antuono (Seaford, N.Y.), and Courtney Latta (Lowell, Mass.) - ran the Seahawks scoreless innings streak to 17 frames. Coute struck out five Mariners in five innings; D'Antuono (pronounced Dan-twah-no) had two Ks in five innings plus her first collegiate win; Latta worked the circle in her first collegiate appearance in the sixth inning and struck out two in a 1-2-3 frame.

Key Stat of the Game
Salve Regina batters banged out 23 hits, 11 for extra bases, and did not strike out in either of the two games.

Turning Points
Bottom of the fourth inning of first game, Mariner starter Taylor Duchesneau (Killingly, Conn.) retired the first two batters on infield groundouts. Salve Regina catcher Holly Kathios (Pelham, N.H.) doubled to left center to start a six-run rally with two outs. Kathios had a pair of doubles in the nightcap as well. Junior infielder Amanda Riley (Barrington, N.H.) tripled in a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth in second game, before coming home with the final run on an error.

Quick Hits

  • Holly Kathios (Pelham, N.H.) had three hits, all doubles.
  • Courtney Latta (Lowell, Mass.) tossed three consecutive balls in her first collegiate appearance to fall behind, 3-0, to the leadoff batter in the top of the sixth of game two - then threw three straight strikes for her first K. She sandwiched another strikeout around a fly out to centerfield for a perfect inning.
  • Mitchell senior Italia Krick (Griswold, Conn.) made a spectacular diving catch in foul territory to end the bottom of the third inning in game two.
  • The Mariners have had only one game go seven innings in 2018 - a 6-3 loss to Eastern Nazarene during a Florida matchup.

Next Up
Both teams have conference matchups on their respective schedules - Salve Regina (5-9, 2-0 CCC) hosts Curry College in a twinbill starting at 2 p.m. on Saturday; Mitchell (8-8, 4-0 NECC) travels to Elms College for a doubleheader on the same day (12 p.m.).
