Seahawks split with Golden Bears to remain in first place

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (April 18, 2017) – The Western New England University softball team split a pair of Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) contests with Salve Regina University on Tuesday afternoon at Golden Bear Park. The Seahawks posted a 6-2 win in the opener, before Western New England bounced back with a 2-1 victory in game two.

Top Performers

  • Freshman Aimee Kistner (Taunton, Mass.) led the Golden Bears offensively, going 3-for-3 with a walk and two RBI. Classmate Paige Uliase (Meriden, Conn.) recorded two singles, while senior shortstop Gabby Lavinio (Dalton, Mass.) doubled and scored a run. 
  • Sophomore Emily Woznick (Sandy Hook, Conn.) powered Salve Regina, as she went 2-for-4 at the plate with a home run and three RBI. 
  • Junior Francesca Galeazzi (Lynn, Mass.) posted a 3-for-4 effort with two runs scored out of the leadoff spot, while sophomore Elizabeth Lombardo (Thomaston, Conn.) went 1-for-3 with a walk, one RBI and two runs scored. 
  • Senior Kelsey Boarman (North Dighton, Mass.) got the start for the Seahawks and went the distance, improving to 12-3 this season after allowing two runs on ten hits over her seven innings of work.

Game Review

  • Lombardo, Woznick and senior Nikki Bukovsky (Westport, Conn.) all recorded RBI hits in the first inning as Salve Regina opened up a 3-0 lead. 
  • Western New England got one run back in the bottom half of the inning on a two-out, RBI single to right field by Kistner. 
  • The Golden Bears stranded two runners on base in the second inning before leaving the bases loaded in the third. 
  • Salve Regina extended its lead to five (6-1) in the fourth when Woznick belted a two-out, three-run home run over the center field fence. 
  • Kistner drove in her second run of the contest in the bottom of the seventh with a single through the left side of the infield, scoring Lavinio from second base.

Top Performers

  • Kistner turned in an impressive performance in the circle to help the Golden Bears salvage a split, as she went the distance and surrendered just one unearned run on seven hits while striking out four batters to improve to 5-2 this spring. The freshman also went 1-for-2 at the plate with a walk and a single. 
  • Williams accounted for two of Western New England's five hits and scored both of the team's runs, while senior Katie Wood (Westport, Mass.) went 1-for-2 with a sacrifice fly. 
  • Woznick and senior Lexi Soucie (North Easton, Mass.) had two hits each for the Seahawks, while freshman pitcher Kaleigh Dwyer (East Brunswick, N.J.) allowed two unearned runs on five hits over six innings of work.

Game Review

  • Western New England took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third, as Williams recorded a one-out single before eventually coming in to score when Wood reached on a Salve Regina fielding error. 
  • Woznick led off the fourth with a double to right field, but she was stranded at third base as Kistner escaped the inning unscathed. The Seahawks tied the contest the following inning when Galeazzi singled up the middle, scoring sophomore Lindsey Florent (New Bedford, Mass.) from third base. 
  • Williams got another rally started for the Golden Bears in the bottom of the fifth, leading off with a single up the middle before advancing to second on another Salve error and moving up to third when Kistner singled to load the bases. 
  • Wood came up next and lifted a fly ball to center field, allowing Williams to score the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly. 
  • Kistner stranded two more runners on base in the sixth inning, before retiring the side in order in the seventh to seal the win.

Notes

  • Kistner has recorded 14 hits over her last eight games with five multi-hit efforts during the same stretch. The freshman lowered her earned run average to 2.49 with her complete game performance in game two. 
  • The Golden Bears limited the Seahawks to just one run in the second contest, marking the first time Salve Regina has scored one run or fewer since April 3 and just the fourth time overall this season.
