Seahawks get complete games from Parry, Boarman; sweep Beacons at Toppa

NEWPORT, R.I. – Nicole Parry (Quincy, Mass.) and Kelsey Boarman (North Dighton, Mass.) both go the distance as the Salve Regina University softball team sweeps a doubleheader matchup with UMass Boston at Toppa Field on Monday night.

Parry pitched a complete game shutout in game one for a 5-0 victory. Parry gave up just one hit with four walks and 10 strikeouts in seven innings of work.

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fourth when Lexi Soucie (North Easton, Mass.) doubled to center field driving in Kara O'Riley (Acton, Mass.). After Kristen Hickey (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) grounded out to short Skye Hart (Hope Valley, R.I.) singled up the middle to bring in Soucie. Taylor Parry (Quincy, Mass.) would ground out to end the inning but the damage was done as the Seahawks took a 2-0 into the top of the fifth.

In the fifth Parry got Lauren Mitsiaris (Taunton, Mass.) to strike out looking before giving up her only hit of the afternoon to Lyndsey Capra (Lowell, Mass.). Capra would steal second and eventually third while Kayla Harris (Cumberland, Maine.) struck out looking as well. Capra would be left stranded at third however as Parry battled back to get Kelsey Cruse (Worcester, Mass.) to line out to her for the final out of the inning.

The Seahawks scored again in the bottom of the sixth to blow the game open. Beacons pitcher Kaera Wyse (Danvers, Mass.) walked Courtney Nowicki (Northford, Conn.) to lead things off. Soucie followed that up by singling to put runners at first and second with no outs. Hickey would sacrifice bunt the runners to second and third setting up Skye Hart who tripled to center field driving in two more runs. Hart would cross the plate herself soon thereafter to make it a 5-0 game.

Nichole Parry returned to the mound for the seventh and made quick work of the Beacons. After giving up a lead-off walk Parry retired the next three matters to seal the shutout victory.

Parry improves to 5-4 on the season while Wyse falls to 0-2 for UMass Boston.

In game two Kelsey Boarman took the mound for the Seahawks to oppose Michele Zullo (Everett, Mass.).

Once again the Seahawks struck first, this time in the bottom of the second. With runners at second and third Hart reached second on an error by the centerfielder allowing Soucie and Kimberly Dennin (Irvine, Calif.) to score. Taylor Parry then reached first on an error by the first baseman. Parry had grounded it to third but the throw went off the glove of Mitsiaris at first, letting Hart come all the way from second for a 3-0 Salve Regina lead.

The Beacons responded in the top of the third to make it a one run game. With one out Haley Dutton (Milton, Mass.) bunted her way to first base. All afternoon Dutton would show bunt batting left-handed before switching to the right side with two strikes. This time Dutton was able to lay down a perfect bunt and out run the throw to first. That set up catcher Ria Raczkowski (Stoneham, Mass.) for a two run homer  to make it 3-2.

The teams would go scoreless until the bottom of the fifth where Julia Bowman (Woodsville, N.H.) doubled to center field scoring Francesca Galeazzi (Lynn, Mass.) and Nikki Bukovsky (Westport, Conn.) to extend Salve Regina lead to 5-2.

Samantha Hemstock (Northford, Conn.) scored in the top of the sixth with two outs to draw the Beacons within two but Boarman got Harris to fly out to strand a base runner and escape a jam.

The Seahawks couldn't add any more insurance in the bottom of the inning, bringing out Boarman for the top of the seventh to try and close out the game as Parry had in game one.

Boarman got Cruse and Kaitlyn Morse (Arlington, Mass.) to ground out before getting Dutton to strike out swinging to cap off a 5-3 win and complete the sweep.

The Seahawks even their overall record at 9-9 while the Beacons fall to 1-11 on the season. The Seahawks also remain undefeated at Toppa Field in 2015.

Next up the Seahawks will travel to face the University of New England in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) doubleheader on April 7. The Beacons will host Curry College for another non-conference doubleheader on April 7, starting at 3 p.m.
