HYANNIS, Mass. - Last weekend, Michael Komar '08 and crew John Ingalls, sailing coaches from Salve Regina University, competed in the International 5o5 class at the Hyannis Yacht Club's 72nd Regatta for One-Design classes held on July 25, 26, and 27, 2014 in the waters of Nantucket Sound and Lewis Bay.

This is the premier regatta on Cape Cod drawing over 200 boats from as far west as California, as far south as Florida, and as far north as Canada. Komar, the skipper, has been competing in the International 5o5 class for the last five years, and received the 2010 North Sails Under 25 year old North American Skipper of the Year as well as placing in the top five at major regattas such as the East Coast Championships in Newport, R.I.

The two Salve Regina sailing coaches fought hard over three days in varying breezes anywhere from five to 25 knots to secure a hard fought third place overall finish.

Also, Komar was awarded the Hyannis Yacht Club Sportsmanship Award, given to the sailor who best portrays a fair competitive spirit and willingness to help others, out of the 500 competitors racing over the weekend.

"It's a great honor to be recognized by your fellow competitors for an award like this," said Komar. "I hope to continue to bring this kind of competition with me to the collegaite level this season at Salve."

The Seahawk sailing team starts this September competing in multiple events over New England its first weekend.
