Seahawks top seven in three regattas

RESULTS

BOSTON, Mass. - Competing in three regattas this weekend, Salve Regina University sailing finished in the top seven at all three events. Taking third at the Firefly and FJ invitational at MIT, Salve Regina managed to hold off a late charge by Roger Williams, beating the Hawks by one point (112 to 113). Finishing behind only to an untouchable Tufts squadron and the hometown Beavers, Salve Regina was able to string together 17 races in the top five.

"It is great to see our team being that consistent," commented head coach John Ingalls. "Going to a city like Boston always proves challenging due to the inconsistent wind conditions. I was really excited to see such consistency for 22 races in one day."

Sailing at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy, Salve Regina had its fair share of ups and downs on the shifty Herring Pond. Continually finishing in top positions, it was a few bad races that kept the Seahawks from title contention. Only 18 points of out third place, Salve Regina held onto its seventh place finish beating nine other teams including Providence College, Yale University and again Roger Williams.

In its third event of the weekend, Salve Regina used a combination of eight different sailors over two days to land in seventh place at the Providence College Invitational. In a strong effort on Sunday, senior captain Chris Jensen (Mountain View, Calif.), junior Baillie Lawless (Rochester, N.Y.), sophomore Shannon Killian (Georgetown, Mass.), and freshman Katie Travers (Haverhill, Mass.) lifted the Seahawks three places, from 10th to seventh, passing Providence College, Mass. Maritime and Wesleyan.

"This was a great event for us," noted Jensen. "Being one of the smaller schools in the extremely competitive New England district, to have eight different sailors come together on this one was great to see."
