Seahawks earn academic award from USTFCCCA
NEWPORT, R.I. – The Salve Regina University men's cross country team has been named an All-Academic Team by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. This marks the fourth consecutive year that the Seahawks have been recognized by the USTFCCCA.
For a team to be eligible for USTFCCCA academic honors, it must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.10 and compile a team score at an NCAA Regional Championship. The Seahawks, who also placed six harriers on the Commonwealth Coast Conference Fall Academic All-Conference Team, had no difficulty meeting either standard.
"The last few classes have done well at raising the bar in terms of academic and athletic performance on our team," said head coach Rob McGuinness. "Maintaining the team GPA is one of our goals for each season, and I am proud of our guys for their consistent results in the classroom."
The academic award capped one of the more successful racing campaigns in the history of the men's cross country program. The team earned an invitational win, the first since the program was reconstituted in 2005, and the first win of any kind since 1987, at the Elms Blazer Cross Country Classic in September. A week later, the harriers won a second championship, claiming the team title at the Tri-State Invitational.
