Men's Cross Country #3 - Martin moves into the No. 1 spot (September 7, 2014)

By Rob McGuinness

NEWPORT, R.I. - Sophomore Billy Martin (West Islip, N.Y.) worked his way to the top of the Salve Regina lineup during the 2014 season, assuming a leading role when the team's top scorer – junior Sean Hughes – was slowed by injuries.

Martin ran at No. 1 in four meets, including all three postseason races. He led the Seahawks in both of their appearances on the 8,000-meter trail course at Gordon College and earned the No. 18 spot on the program's all-time performance list with his finish (27:31.31) at the ECAC Division III Championship at Westfield State University.

His fastest performance of the fall – 27:01.29 – came at the UMass Dartmouth Invitational in September, a mark that now stands at No. 7 on the team's all-time list for 8K and 5 miles. Martin is the only runner other than Hughes to hold a spot in the top 10 on the list.

Martin shared the team's runner of the year award for the 2014 season.

"We finally started to strike the right balance in Billy's training, and it showed in his results," said head coach Rob McGuinness. "His performances at UMass-Dartmouth and Westfield State were real indicators of his potential. I can't wait to see what he does in the next two years."
