Seahawks leave high temps at Lehigh

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Salve Regina freshmen Billy Martin (West Islip, N.Y.) and Tyler Torelli (Ledyard, Conn.) led the way as the Seahawks made their debut in the Paul Short Run at Lehigh University. Running in hot, humid conditions that would later halt the meet, Martin (29:26) and Torelli (29:50) finished in the top half of the field in the men's White Race as the Seahawks placed 33rd of 42 teams.

Sophomore Slater Roosa (Woodbury, Conn.),  and freshmen Jay Brennan (North Haven, Conn.) and Anthony Tandy (Hopedale, Mass.) rounded out the scoring five, completing the 8,000-meter Goodman Cross Country Course in 31:03, 31:22 and 31:37.

Senior James Weselcouch (East Haddam, Conn.) and freshman Sam Onofreo (Middlefield, Conn.) were the Seahawks' sixth and seventh runners at 31:54 and 33:49.  Sophomores Ben Campbell (Carolina, R.I.) and Matt Sinkewicz (Colchester, Conn.) finished at 34:29 and 34:56.

Muhlenberg College won the White Race with a team score of 131. Juniata College was second with 141 points, and Franklin and Marshall was third with 188. Brett Kubiak of Gwynedd Mercy College was the overall winner, crossing the finish line in 25:35.

Officials stopped the meet following the White Race as an increasing number of athletes sought treatment for heat-related illnesses. Temperatures reached the mid-80s by midday, and the growing need for medical assistance "overwhelmed" area emergency services, according to announcements made at the meet.
