Hughes and teammates score a fifth-place

MANCHESTER, Conn. - Sophomore Sean Hughes (Old Saybrook, Conn.) and a pack of four freshmen helped Salve Regina earn a fifth-place finish in the Trinity Invitational at Wickham Park on Saturday. With three runners in the top 30, the Seahawks showed significant improvement at a meet where they finished ninth a year ago.

Hughes covered the 5,000-meter trail course in 17:25 to finish 10th in the field of 85 runners. Freshmen Anthony Tandy (Hopedale, Mass.), Billy Martin (West Islip, N.Y.), Dan Regan (Westford, Mass.) and Tyler Torelli (Ledyard, Conn.) ran 18:06, 18:11, 18:28 and 18:36 to round out the scoring five. Sophomore Timothy Roosa (Woodbury, Conn.) and freshman Jay Brennan (North Haven, Conn.) were the Seahawks' sixth and seventh runners, finishing in 19:04 and 19:13.

"It is encouraging to see our freshmen making such an immediate contribution to the team," said head coach Dave Kraszewski. "Sean Hughes is doing a great job in the No. 1 spot, but Anthony Tandy, Billy Martin, Dan Regan and Tyler Torelli are making us so much more competitive. They're nearly interchangeable as our second, third, fourth and fifth runners, and they have so much potential for success if they keep working together."

Siena College placed five runners in the top 15 to win the meet with 28 points. Connecticut College, ranked eighth in the Division III New England preseason cross country poll, was second with 73, while Trinity was third with 94. The University of New Haven was fourth with 105 points and Salve Regina was fifth with 121.

Other Salve Regina finishers included:

Senior James Weselcouch (East Haddam, Conn.) - 19:26
Freshman Kevin Onofreo (Middlefield, Conn.) - 19:33
Sophomore Ben Campbell (Carolina, R.I.) - 20:38
