Pride powers past Seahawks

NEWPORT, R.I. -- The Springfield College men's tennis team picked up an 8-1 victory on the road at Salve Regina University on Tuesday afternoon.

The victory snapped the Pride's four-game slide as it improved to 2-4 on the year; the Seahawks slip to 0-4 after their first competition this spring.

Springfield wasted no time seizing control of the match as it took three victories in doubles play.  Court Honda (Morioka, Japan) and Drew Delorenzo (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) cruised to an 8-0 at the No. 1 spot, while the No. 2 team of Freddie Moffa (Granby, Conn.) and Jack Anastopoulos (Chestnut Hill, Mass.) and the No. 3 squad of Lucas Van Deventer (Ellington, Conn.) and James Foley (Fair Haven, N.J.) each delivered wins by scores of 8-3.

Hieu Ton (Rocky Hill, Conn.) was the first off the courts following a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles, and Honda clinched the match with a 6-1, 6-3 victory at No. 1.  Anastopoulos followed with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 4, and following a win by Seahawk sophomore Will Chasse (Greenville, R.I.) at No. 3, Delorenzo battled his way to a 6-1, 4-6, 10-6 win at No. 2 and Van Deventer added a 6-3, 6-4 triumph at the No. 5 spot.

The Pride will continue its six-match road swing as it heads to Norwich for a non-conference clash on Sunday that will start at 11 a.m. Salve Regina has its first conference tilt of the season when it hosts Gordon College at 1 p.m.
