NEWPORT, R.I. - Salve Regina University men's tennis opened its 2016-17 campaign sweeping three doubles matches by a combined 24-3 score before finishing with a 7-2 victory over visiting Wheelock College on Friday afternoon.
Junior Alessio Ayuninjam (Tiverton, R.I.) and sophomore Zach Monahan (Stoughton, Mass.) got the doubles sweep rolling with an 8-0 decision at third doubles. Junior Kevin Brocks (Albany, N.Y.) and sophomore Jeremiah Callahan (Hendersonville, N.C.) followed with an 8-1 score at first doubles. Sophomore D.J. Bisaillon (Watertown, Conn.) and junior Will Masse (Wyoming, R.I.) completed the sweep with an 8-2 win at second doubles.
In singles, the Seahawks were victorious at third, fourth, fifth, and sixth all in straight sets. Ayuninjam followed his doubles triumph with a 6-1,6-0 win at fifth singles. Masse and Monahan were also winners (third and fourth, respectively) while edging out 6-4 second-set scores.
Kevin Hunt (Higganum, Conn.) entered the lineup at sixth singles and posted a 6-1,6-0 score.
Salve Regina (1-0) competes in the Clark University tournament on Sunday, October 2, in Worcester, Mass.
