NEWPORT, R.I. - Salve Regina University freshman Will Masse (Wyoming, R.I.) grinded out his seventh singles victory of the season in men's tennis, but the Seahawks fell to the visiting Golden Bears of Western New England University, 8-1, in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action at the Newport campus courts.

Greg Spear (Windsor, Conn.) and Chris Tischofer (Portland, Conn.) put the visitors on the board with an 8-0 score at third doubles. Alexander Sause (Cusago, Italy) and Adam Zimmerman (South Windsor, Conn.) extended the lead to 2-0 with their 8-1 victory at second doubles. When PJ Nassar (Longmeadow, Mass.) and Andres Otero (Caracas, Venezuela) survived an 8-6 set with Donovan Gangewere (Exton, Pa.) and Jack Lawlor (York, Maine), the Golden Bears had swept the doubles action.

Sause, Otero, and Spear won in straight sets in singles at the top three spots, respectively.

Peter LeFrancois (Marlborough, Mass.) scored a 6-0, 6-1 win at fourth singles over Kevin Brocks (West Sand Lake, N.Y.), and Tischofer handled Matt Gingras (Wethersfield, Conn.) at sixth singles.

Masse won his third straight decision to improve to 7-5 on the season.

Salve Regina (2-11, 0-5 CCC) hosts Curry College on Thursday in the final regular season home match for Seahawk seniors Monaf Awwa (Old Lyme, Conn.) and Matthew Carroll (Hackensack, N.J.). Western New England (6-5, 3-3 CCC) travels to Vermont for a non-league match with Johnson State on Thursday.
