Leopards score 8-1 win over Seahawks

WESTON, Mass. – Taking all three doubles flights and winning five of six singles flights, the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's tennis team cruised to an 8-1 victory over Salve Regina in Commonwealth Coast Conference action played at Regis College.

With the win the Leopards improve to 3-6 overall and 2-3 in CCC play while the Seahawks suffer their fourth straight defeat to stand at 1-10 (0-4).

Sophomores Nate Schwartz (Chester Springs, Pa.) and James Thomas put the Leopards on the board with an 8-0 win over senior Monaf Awwa (Old Lyme, Conn.) and freshman Alessio Ayuninjam (Tiverton, R.I.) at No. 2. At No. 1, junior James Drum (Madison, Conn.) and freshman Jeff Tocco (Plymouth, Mass.) picked up am 8-3 win over freshmen Jack Lawlor (York, Maine) and Kevin Brocks (West Sand Lake, N.Y.). Wentworth completed the doubles sweep with an 8-5 win at No. 3 as junior Josh Dowd (Bristol, Conn.) and senior Sean Nolan (Newport, R.I.) triumphed over junior Matt Gingras (Wethersfield, Conn.) and freshman Will Masse (Wyoming, R.I.).

Schwartz defeated Brocks, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 2 singles before Salve Regina recorded its only point of the match at No. 4 when Mase defeated senior Dylan Melnik (Raleigh, N.C.), 6-2, 6-1. Sophomore Mike Withington (Plymouth, Mass.) clinched the match for the Black & Gold with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Ayuninjam at No. 6.

Tocco defeated Awwa, 7-5, 6-2 at No. 3, Drum bested Lawlor at No. 1, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), and sophomore Zach Peter (Preston, Conn.) earned a point at No. 5 with a 7-5, 7-6 (7-3) win over Gingras.

Wentworth is at Nichols on Tuesday while Salve Regina is at Lesley tomorrow.
