Maksut wins third; Drum beats Seahawks at top two spots
NEWPORT, R.I. - Wentworth Institute of Technology men's tennis ended a five-match losing skid with a 7-2 winning decision over Salve Regina University in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action in Newport. The Leopards improve to 3-5 overall and 2-3 in league while the Seahawks remain winless in 2014 (0-9; 0-6 CCC).
Wentworth swept the doubles with two close decisions at second and third. James Drum (Madison, Conn.) and Matthew Smith (Pelham, N.H.) had an 8-3 victory at first doubles, facing the Seahawk captains Colin Gunning (Norwell, Mass.) and Khoa Nguyen (Haverhill, Mass.).
Josh Dowd (Bristol, Conn.) and Nate chwartz (Chester Springs, Pa.) took an 8-6 decision at second doubles against Monaf Awwa (Old Lyme, Conn.) and Matthew Carroll (Hackensack, N.J.). Sean Nolan (Newport, R.I.) and Zach Peter (Preston, Conn.) bested Matt Gingras (Wethersfield, Conn.) and Ned Richard (Kennebunk, Maine) by the same score at third doubles.
C.J. Maksut (Saco, Maine) earned his third victory of the season with a straight-set victory at sixth singles for Salve Regina. Gingras added the second Seahawk point with his hard-fought victory at fifth singles.
Drum beat Gunning at first singles while teammate Seng Ly (Lynn, Mass.) earned a singles point for the Leopards at fourth, defeating Carroll 6-0,6-3.
Salve Regina still owns a 23-5 record in the all-time series, but Wentworth has won three of the last five meetings. The Seahawks return to conference action on the road Tuesday at Western New England; the Leopards host defending conference champion Nichols College the same day.
