Nguyen nudges a victory at second singles

NEWPORT, R.I. - Eastern Nazarene College men's tennis swept three doubles matches en route to scoring an 8-1 decision against Salve Regina University in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action in Newport.

Davis Steelman (Darlington, Md.) and Nick Thompson (York, Pa.) secured the first point for the visiting Lions with an 8-1 final at second doubles. Andres Biondi (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) and Kevin Paterno (Buenos Aires, Argentina) won six of the first seven games at third doubles before Matt Gingras (Wethersfield, Conn.) and Ned Richard (Kennebunk, Maine) rallied for a quick two; the Lions' pair earned two more wins for an 8-3 final.

At first doubles, senior co-captain Colin Gunning (Norwell, Mass.) held serve to open the match with his parter and fellow captain Khoa Nguyen (Haverhill, Mass.)Sam McKay-Corkum (Rehoboth, Mass.) and Tyler Perron (Plympton, Mass.) then took six straight games before settling for an 8-3 victory.

Eastern Nazarene (6-7; 3-2 CCC) won five singles matches in straight sets. McKay-Corkum dropped just one game at first singles, Perron just two games at third singles.

Nguyen earned the lone point for Salve Regina (0-8; 0-5 CCC) with a straight-set win at second singles.

The Seahawks host Wentworth Institute of Technology on Saturday (1 p.m.) with senior day festivities for Gunning. The Lions return to Rhode Island on the weekend to face Roger Williams University in a battle for third place in the conference standings.
