Hawks best Seahawks in men's tennis
BRISTOL, R.I. - The Roger Williams University Men's Tennis team made its 2013-14 Commonwealth Coast Conference debut with a 9-0 victory over Salve Regina University Tuesday afternoon.
The Hawks began the day with a sweep at doubles. Ryan Swanson (West Newbury, Mass.) and Taylor Webster (Bristol, Conn.) defeated Colin Gunning (Norwell, Mass.) and Khoa Nguyen (Haverhill, Mass.) 8-2 at first, while Zack Bussiere (Colchester, Conn.) Eric Laboissonniere (Cumberland, R.I.) grabbed an 8-0 win over Monaf Awwa (Old Lyme, Conn.) and Matthew Carroll (Hackensack, N.J.) at second.
Kyle Bull (Pleasantville, N.Y.) and Jonah Schwartz (Orange, Conn.) wrapped up the sweep for the Hawks at third, claiming an 8-1 win over Matt Gingras (Wethersfield, Conn.) and Ned Richard (Kennebunk, Maine).
At singles, Laboissionniere and Schwartz notched identical 6-0, 6-0 wins at first and sixth respectively, while Webster and Swanson only dropped two games between them. Webster won 6-0, 6-1 at third while Swanson pulled off a 6-0, 6-1 victory at fourth. Bussiere rolled to a 6-0, 6-2 win at second, while Gingras was able to get three games off of Bull at fifth, but still fell 6-2, 6-1.
"We're competing and improving," said Seahawk head cach Cory Tusler. "The guys are taking things from practice and implementing them in match play."
Salve Regina (0-4; 0-2 CCC) travels to UMass Dartmouth on Thursday for a non-league match.
