NEWPORT, R.I. - The Salve Regina University men's soccer team earned the No. 2 seed in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Championships and hosts No 3 Gordon College in the semifinals.

The Salve Regina University men's soccer team got a goal in the 80th minute from senior Conor Woods (Otisville, N.Y.) on a feed from freshman Rich Ventura (Floral Park, N.Y.) to account for the only score as the Seahawks defeated No. 7 Nichols College in 2018 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Men's Soccer Championships quarterfinal at Toppa Field in Newport

SEAHAWKS NOTES FROM THE NEST

  • Seniors Richie Leister and Matthew O'Donnell are joined by junior Noah Medeiros as tri-captains for the 2018 Seahawks.
  • Junior Donald Igo leads the CCC in points (38) and ranks second in goals (14) and assists (10). He is the only player to have double figures in both categories.
  • Classmate Evan MacDonald leads all players in the league with his school-record 17 assists. MacDonald also has 27 points to rank third in the conference.
  • Igo's 14 goals this year are third-best all-time in a men's soccer season at Salve Regina - Josh Keller (18 in 1992) and Sean McAllister (16 in 2010).
  • Seahawks have scored a school-record 60 goals from 11 players in 19 games. Igo and sophomore Owen Stevenson (12) are the only ones to have double-figure goals.
  • Senior Michael Payan has set a school record with 10 shutouts this season; he now has 16 shutouts for his career.
  • Payan ranks second in save percentage (.857) and third in goals against average (0.66) in the CCC.
  • Salve Regina has matched its most wins ever in a season - 16 in 2012. The 16th victory in that year came against Nichols College in the title game.
  • Previous Seahawk championships - 1998, 2002, 2012.

SCOTS STORIES

  • The Scots have won the men's soccer title five times - 1990, 1992, 1993, 2003, and 2015.
  • They have fallen in the title match six times - 1999, 2001, 2005, 2010, 2014, and 2017.
  • This is the 10th postseason meeting between Gordon and Salve Regina; Gordon own a 7-2 record in those games.
  • Tyler Modzeleski (8g, 2a, 18p) and Jarvin Ramirez (4g, 4a, 12p) are the top two scorers for the Scots.
  • Brody Veleber ranks first in the league for save percentage (.885) and goals against average (.51).

INSIDE THE SERIES
Today's semifinal matchup marks the 35th meeting between Salve Regina University and Gordon College in men's soccer. The Scots hold a 19-12-3 record all-time and have gone 3-1-2 versus the Seahawks in the last six meetings. Earlier this season the Seahawks and Scots met on Brother Reynolds field in Newport, R.I., and fought to a 1-1 draw. Salve Regina took a 1-0 lead in the 20th when Owen Stevenson converted a one-touch feed from senior Conor Woods. The lead lasted into the 82nd minute until senior Ian Burkhart served a corner kick to freshman Ryan Modzeleski who drilled his shot that deflected off a Seahawk and found the back of the net. After two scoreless overtime frames the game ended in a draw.
