Summary
NEWPORT, R.I. - Salve Regina University men's soccer won its seventh straight game to open the 2018 season, improving to 7-0-0 with a 3-0 victory over the United States Coast Guard Academy in non-league action Wednesday night.

Series and Streaks
Salve Regina owns a 4-2-1 record all-time in the series. The teams have gone 1-1-1 in the last three meetings.

Three Stars of the Game

  1. Salve Regina senior Matthew O'Donnell (Pittsburgh, Pa.) recorded a hat-trick to account for all of the Seahawks scoring.
  2. Salve Regina senior Michael Payan (Fort Lee, N.J.) made four saves to record his fifth shutout of the season.
  3. Salve Regina junior Noah Medeiros (Dartmouth, Mass.) was the defensive anchor for the Seahawks at his centerback position, communicating and cleaning up plays for the Seahawks who rarely allowed the Bears to possess the ball in their zone.

Turning Point
A foul on the Bears keeper resulted in an indirect kick six yards away from the goal. The Bears were able to put all 11 players in the net to defend the play, but Donald Igo (Needham, Mass.) faked out the Bears with an attempt at the ball before softly touching it to O'Donnell who ripped a shot to the top of the net past the wall of Bears defenders for a 2-0 lead late in the first half.

Key Stat of the Game
The Bears had nearly as many yellow cards (3) as they did shots on goal (4).

Quick Hits

  • The Seahawks have not been 7-0-0 since they started 8-0-0 in 2012 (the best start in program history).
  • Senior keeper William Bragaw (East Lyme, Conn.) made seven saves in the loss to fall to 0-1-1 on the season.
  • The Seahawks outshot the Bears 17-9 and 10-4 in shots on goal. The Bears were held without a shot on the goal until the 53rd minute.
