BRISTOL, R.I. - The Salve Regina University men's soccer team defeated Roger Williams University, 3-1, in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action at Bristol. Salve Regina (6-6-0; 3-2-0 CCC) now has a 4-1-2 record in its last seven meetings with Roger Williams (6-6-1; 3-2-0 CCC), since 2010.

Both teams braved through cold and rainy conditions early on in the game before the rain began to clear up.

The Hawks wasted little time getting on the board, notching the first score of the game in the third minute. Tyler Kuchenbecker (Wellesley, Mass.) took advantage of a bad pass by the Salve defense and stole the ball. He then made his way into the box and knocked in his second goal of the year.

Salve Regina's Issa Demirgioglu (Smithfield, R.I.) nearly tied the game in the 16th minute off of a corner kick. He controlled the ball in the box and put up a shot on net, but RWU's Kurt Isleib (Killingworth, Conn.) was able to put his body in front of the ball to save the goal.

The Hawks would not be as fortunate later in the half. In the 39th minute, the Hawk defense converged on Salve Regina as the Seahawks brought the ball into the penalty area. RWU tried to clear the ball out, but a high awkward bounce backwards sent the ball over the keeper and into the net for an own goal.

Kuchenbecker almost gave the Hawks the lead in the 72nd minute, finding himself in the penalty area with a fairly clear shot on net. However, the Seahawk's Peter Melo (Billerica, Mass.) was able to get in front of the shot and get his body on it to keep the Hawks off the board.

However, a crucial Hawk error proved to be the key for the Seahawks. A Hawk defender tried to stop a Salve pass into the box, but got called for a hand-ball after the ball deflected off of his arm, setting up a penalty kick. Wasilewski stepped up for Salve and buried the shot into the left corner to give the Seahawks the lead.

Salve Regina would tally an insurance goal in the 88th minute, when Wasilewski took the ball down the left sideline and in towards the net, drawing out Hawk keeper Tom Mangels (Garden City, N.Y.). Wasilewski would cross the ball to his right to Nolan Brady (Needham, Mass.), who knocked in the easy goal.

Seahawk keeper Daniel Stern (Kings Park, N.Y.) needed only one save for the win. Mangels had six saves for the Hawks in the loss.

Roger Williams travels to UMass-Dartmouth on Wednesday, while Salve Regina heads to UMass-Boston on Tuesday.
