NEWPORT, R.I. – The Salve Regina men's soccer team downed Commonwealth Coast Conference and in-state rival Roger Williams 2-1 on Homecoming and Alumni Weekend at Reynolds Field, Saturday afternoon.

With the win, Salve Regina improves to 3-5-1 on the season and 1-2 in the CCC while Roger Williams moves to 8-2 on the year and 1-2 in the conference.

Sophomore Andrew Chenard (Kingston, Mass.) struck first to get the Seahawks on the board in the 12th minute to give SRU 1-0 lead. Roger Williams found its equalizer just over 20 minutes later after Andrew Carlson took a pass from Trevor Hoxsie to beat Salve Regina's keeper and even the score at 1-1.

The Hawks had a chance to take the lead before the half ended with a corner kick chance with just over a minute left, but could not capitalize and the two teams went into half time tied 1-1.

Salve Regina took the lead for good with a goal from junior Nicholas Carbone (Quincy, Mass.) off a pass from junior Issa Demirgioglu (Smithfield, R.I.) in the 53rd minute to put the Seahawks ahead, 2-1.

Salve Regina's sophomore goalie Daniel Stern (Kings Park, N.Y.) made two more saves over the final 37 minutes to maintain the Seahawks' 2-1 advantage.

Stern needed six saves in the win while Jon Pelloso made five saves in the loss.

Salve Regina returns to the pitch on Tuesday, Oct. 1 when the Seahawks travel to Mass. Maritime while RWU takes on Babson on Oct. 2.
