NEWPORT, R.I. - University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men's soccer scored two first-half goals and that held up for a 2-0 non-league victory over Salve Regina University on Reynolds Field in Newport.
Corsairs improve to 4-1 on the season while the Seahawks drop tp 2-3-1 with their second straight defeat.
Junior defender Josh Chao (New Bedford, Mass.) had his third goal of the season to put the Corsairs up 1-0 at 21:22; senior forward Victor Ferreira (St. Michael, Portugal) assisted on the play.
UMass Dartmouth got an insurance tally before the end of the first 45 minutes as junior midfielder Mike Diogo (Bristol, R.I.) received a cross from freshman Matt Vidal (New Bedford, Mass.) and deposited it for a 2-0 advantage.
The Corsairs received two yellow cards in the first half but Salve Regina was unable to capitalize.
Salve Regina outshot the visitors, 12-to-9, and had the edge in both halves. Freshman keeper Andrew Deane (Woburn, Mass.) made four saves for his first collegiate victory; sophomore Jeffrey L'Heureux (Litchfield, N.H.) had one stop for the Seahawks.
The Seahawks return to Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play with a match at Gordon College on Saturday (7 p.m.). With its third straight win and second consecutive shutout, UMass Dartmouth travels to Providence on Saturday for the Little East Conference (LEC) opener with Rhode Island College (1 p.m.).
