Streaking Seahawks top Leopards

BOSTON, Mass. – Senior Zach Makoske (Shoreham, N.Y.) scored two goals and assisted on three others as the Salve Regina University men's lacrosse team picked up a 12-3 win over Wentworth Institute of Technology in Commonwealth Coast Conference action Tuesday night.

Winners of four straight the Seahawks improve to 9-3 overall and 3-1 in CCC play while the Leopards fall to 6-5 (1-4).

A defensive-minded contest for nearly the first nine and a half minutes, the score remained tied at 0-all before Salve Regina scored three times in a span of 3:08 to take a 3-0 lead. Freshman Brendan Kelly (Long beach, N.Y.), senior Matt Heeter (Wading River, N.Y.), and Makoske each scored goals while freshman Pat Leary (Wakefield, Mass.) had two assists. Wentworth got on the board 22 seconds later on a marker from senior Jake Ollila (Goffstown, N.H.), who was assisted by junior Jacob Eldred (Goffstown, N.H.). Eldred scored with 44 seconds left to make it a 3-2 game after the first quarter.

Salve Regina did all of the scoring in the second quarter and used an early third quarter goal to take an 8-2 lead. Sophomore Ethan Robson (Lincoln, R.I.) had a pair of goals during the run while Makoske had a goal and two assists and senior Andrew Fera (Cranston, R.I.) added a goal and an assist. Eldred made it an 8-3 game with a goal from freshman Ben Coakley (Flemington, N.J.) with 10:06 left in the quarter, however, neither team found the back of the net until Leary scored just before the end of the quarter to make it 9-3.

Leary's goal started a 4-0 spurt which extended the lead to 12-3 with 4:30 remaining. Sophomore Riley Smith (Plaistow, N.H.) scored for Wentworth with 1:55 remaining.

Kelly (three goals), Robson (two goals), Fera (two goals, one assist), and Leary (one goal, two assists) all had multiple points for the Seahawks. Junior Mike Mongelli (Roslyn, N.Y.), sophomore Joe Sousa (Cranston, R.I.), and senior Matt D'Amore (Duxbury, Mass.) each scooped up five ground balls. Sousa was also 10-of-18 at the X. Sophomore Matt Wasp (St. James, N.Y.) caused four turnovers.

Eldred had two goals and an assist while Coakley finished with a pair of assists. Sophomore Kyle Doner (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) and senior Brad Krueger (Chelmsford, Mass.) each had four ground balls while sophomore Jake Berry (Beverly, Mass.) and freshman Jake Renzi (Acton, Mass.) caused a pair of turnovers apiece.

D'Amore finished with 11 saves while seniors Adam Dufault (Lexington, Mass.) and Scott Boucher (Salisbury, N.H.) had eight and seven stops, respectively, for Wentworth. Salve Regina had a 38-25 shot advantage and a 44-32 advantage in ground balls. The Seahawks were also 22-for-25 in clearing attempts.

Both teams are in action on Saturday as Wentworth is at Gordon and Salve Regina hosts the University of New England.
