Mustangs hand Seahawks first loss

NEWTON, Mass. – With a 9-7 win over Salve Regina University, Mount Ida College men's lacrosse improved to 3-0 for the first time in program history and moved to 4-1 all-time against the Seahawks.

The Mustangs got off to a hot start with six unanswered goals in the first period, and never trailed in the game.

Jon Berry (Chichester, N.H.) scored a hat trick, and Kyle Ton (Norwich, Conn.), Marcus Donahue (Braintree, Mass.) and Wyatt Sullivan (Arlington, Mass.) scored two goals apiece to account for the Mustang's scoring.

Cam Hayward (Derry, N.H.) made 16 saves to improve to 3-0 on the year between the pipes, while Salve Regina got nine saves out of Matt D'Amore (Duxbury, Mass.), but he and his team  each suffered their first loss and fell to 4-1 on the season.

The Seahawks were led by Zach Makoske (Shoreham, N.Y.), who scored three goals and had one assist, and Nick LoCicero (Lynbrook, N.Y.), who had six points on two goals and four helpers.

Mount Ida face-off man Alex Zito (Andover, Conn.) won six of the eight face-offs.

Sullivan scored two of the first three goals on either side of a Berry tally, and then Kyle Ton scored on either side of Donahue as the Mustangs took the early lead.

LoCicero scored the only goal of the second period to get Salve on the board, but Donahue and two goals by Berry in the third pushed the advantage to 9-2.

Makoske scored all three of his goals in the fourth quarter, when the Seahawks outscored the Mustangs 5-0.

Mount Ida will travel to Gordon on Friday afternoon for a 2:30 pm start, a game moved up from Saturday.

Salve Regina will head to Tampa, Florida to face Berry on Sunday at 7:00 pm.
