Seahawks hold on in fourth to improve to 5-0

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. - In a non-conference men's lacrosse game this afternoon the Salve Regina University men's lacrosse team defeated Farmingdale State 12-10. The Rams are now 1-1 on the year, while the Seahawks improved to 5-0.

Salve Regina led 5-1 midway through the second quarter, until FSC senior midfielder Derrick Sherrod (Huntington, N.Y.) scored an unassisted goal to cut the deficit to three. Three minutes later, the Rams closed to 5-3 with a man-up goal by senior midfielder Conor Pittard (Setauket, N.Y.) off the pass from Michael Cegielski (Somers, N.Y.).

Each team added a goal over the final 1:20 of the second quarter as the Seahawks took a 6-4 lead into halftime.

With 9:56 left to play in the third and Seahawks up 8-4, Farmingdale State used back-to-back goals from Cegielski and Sherrod to close within two, 8-6.

After Salve Regina increased its lead to 12-7 early in the fourth, Farmingdale State answered with an unassisted score from Cegielski. Sherrod added a goal for FSC with 4:44 left to play to cut the Rams deficit to 12-9 and Cegielski followed with his fourth goal of the game but the Rams fell, 12-10.

Cegielski finished with a game-high five points on four goals and one assist, while Sherrod added three goals. Senior defender Matthew Brendel (Hicksville, N.Y.) recorded game-highs in both caused turnovers (5) and ground balls (7).

Junior attack Nick LoCicero (Lynbrook, N.Y.) had four goals and one assist and sophomore attack Andrew Fera (Cranston, R.I.) tallied three scores and one assist for the Seahawks.

FSC senior goalkeeper Thomas Fallon (Kings Park, N.Y.) stopped eight shots for the Rams, while sophomore Matt D'Amore (Duxbury, Mass.) had 12 saves for Salve Regina.
