NEWPORT, R.I. - A long, brutal winter kept Salve Regina spring sports teams inside until their first competitions. For the Seahawk men's lacrosse program which raised funds for a trip to Tampa, Fla., the first time outside meant a chance to compete against nationally-ranked Ithaca College and NCAA championship participant Catholic University.

After a tremendous 2014 season going 15-5 and winning the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) New England Division III Championship, the Salve Regina men's lacrosse program looked to ride positive momentum into the 2015 campaign.

"We are excited about the 2015 schedule," said Seahawk 12th-year head coach Patrick Cooney. "The student athletes are motivated. Our success in 2014, talented newcomers, several new opponents, a spring trip to Florida, and our ever improving Commonwealth Coast Conference have helped the program progress."

The Seahawks met the Cardinals and Bombers on neutral soil, or more accurately, turf of the University of Tampa lacrosse complex in Florida. With temperatures reaching the 90s on both days of competition (March 10 and 12), the Seahawks enjoyed flying south for the "winter" games.

A state-of-the-art scoreboard at the Tampa facility displayed the largest graphics ever for a Salve Regina contest. Sophomore Nicholas LoCicero (Lynbrook, N.Y.) scored two goals and assisted on two others to lead the Seahawk offense in the season opener against Catholic.
