Seahawks fall to Mustangs, 11-7

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. – The Salve Regina men's lacrosse team made a strong come back against Mount Ida College in the fourth quarter on Wednesday afternoon at Gaudet Field, but came up just short as the Mustangs came away with their first win of the season, 11-7.  

Salve Regina fell behind 1-0 in the first 29 seconds of the game when defensemen Michael Whitney (Chaska, Minn.), a sophomore for the Mustangs put his team on the board. Freshmen attackman Sharp Jones (Scituate, Mass.) answered back minutes later to tie the game at 1-1.  For the first quarter of the game the Seahawks and Mustangs were neck and neck, with the quarter ending Salve ahead 3-2.

In the second quarter Mustangs sophomore attackman Michael Trocchi (Danvers, Mass.) had two of his three goals of the game to put Mount Ida in front 4-3. Only 23 second later Mount Ida's freshmen attack man Phil Pichel (Hopkinton, Mass.) extend the Mustang lead to two goals. Salve Regina's Cam Brazill (Ridgewood, N.J.) scored his first collegiate goal and the Seahawks only goal of the second quarter to cut the lead to 6-4 at halftime.
Senior midfielder Jake Davis (Chester, N.H.) added another goal for the Mustangs only 1:06 seconds into the third quarter to extend the their lead to 7-4.  Davis' goal kicked off a 4-0 run for the Mustangs before Slave Regina's midfielder Curtis McKeon (West Haven, Conn.) scored with: 10 left in the third, leaving the Seahawks behind 10-5 at the beginning of the fourth quarter.   
Salve Regina was able to cut the lead to 10-6 at 10:45 into the quarter when senior midfielder Francis McNulty (Dunham, Conn.) scored his second goal of the season. Salve Regina faced a three-goal deficit, 10-7, with 8:18 remaining in the game but was unable to score again, resulting in a loss of 11-7.
Salve Regina will be traveling to Newton, Mass. to face Lasell College on Mar. 2. The opening faceoff is set for 1 p.m.
