Hawks defeat in-state rival Salve Regina, 22-12

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. - Senior Jim Turenne (Bristol, R.I.) and sophomore Drew Beck (Cross River, N.Y.) each scored four goals to propel the Roger Williams University men's lacrosse team to a 22-12 win over Salve Regina University in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) action Wednesday evening at Gaudet Field.

Senior Logan Roebuck (Montgomery, N.Y.) chipped in with three goals for the Hawks (5-4, 5-1 TCCC), who rain their win streak against the Seahawks to six. The Hawks moved the ball efficiently all night, racking up 10 assists - including two each from Turenne and junior Justin Leddy (Sea Girt, N.J.). Sophomore Ian Powers (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and freshman John Ricciardi (Duxbury, Mass.) each posted two goals and an assist.

 

Senior Evan Gates (Ridge, N.J.) racked up a team-high three goals for Salve Regina (5-6, 2-4 TCCC) while juniors Chris Walker (Marshfield, Mass.) and Brendan Carroll (Garden City, N.J.) each scored twice. Walker added two assists while Carroll tacked on one helper. Freshman Chad Hollenshade (Lutherville, Md.) notched a goal and an assist.

 

Behind a pair of goals from Turenne, the Hawks raced out to a 4-0 lead and led 6-2 after one quarter. Goals from Carroll and Walker to open the second quarter closed the gap to 6-4, but Roger Williams outscored the Seahawks 5-2 from that point on to take an 11-6 lead into halftime.

 

Roger Williams took complete control of the tilt in the third, outscoring the Seahawks 7-1 to build an 18-7 lead. Seven different Hawks found the back of the net during the quarter, led by a goal and an assist from Beck, Turenne, and Smith.

 

Salve Regina outshot the Hawks 49-45 and held a 26-22 edge in ground balls. Freshman Curtis McKeon (West Haven, Conn.) collected a team-high seven ground balls as he won 17 face-offs. Senior Austin Fehringer (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) won 18-of-31 face-offs and grabbed four ground balls for RWU.

 

Senior Tyler Roebuck (Montgomery, N.Y.) made 14 saves to earn his fifth win of the season while classmate Brett Pimental (East Falmouth, Mass.) made five saves for Salve Regina.

 

The Seahawks return to action on Saturday when they travel to Massachusetts for a 7 p.m. game at Wentworth. The Hawks host Nichols at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday.
