Carroll, Walker Combine for 15 Points, Lead Seahawks Past AMCats, 19-6

NEWPORT, R.I. - Sophomore Brendan Carroll (Garden City, N.Y.) scored five goals and handed out three assists to propel the Salve Regina University men's lacrosse team to a 19-6 win over Anna Maria College in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) men's lacrosse action Saturday afternoon at Reynolds Field.

 

Classmate Chris Walker (Marshfield, Mass.) added six goals and an assist for the Seahawks, who improved to 7-6 (4-3 TCCC) with the win. Freshman Matt Lochner (Lima, N.Y.) potted three goals for the AMCats, who slipped to 4-8 (0-6 TCCC).

 

The Seahawks led 6-1 at the end of one period of action as junior Evan Gates (Ridge, N.J.) scored his 13th and 14 goals of the season while classmate Mike Augustus (Bristol, R.I.) chipped in with a goal and an assist. In the second, SRU outscored Anna Maria 4-3 to take a 10-4 lead into halftime. Carroll paced the Seahawks with three goals and Lochner tallied two for the AMCats.

 

Senior Ryan Comerford (Merrimack, N.H.) and Carroll each scored twice in the third stanza, helping Salve Regina build a 16-5 lead going into the fourth. Walker notched his 34th and 35th markers of 2010 in the final quarter, sandwiched around a marker from Carroll, his 11th of the season. Freshman Nikolas Langlois (Hatfield, Mass.) closed the scoring with his 16th of the season at 4:20 for Anna Maria.

 

"It was nice to get back on track with a win, and it was nice to see everyone have the opportunity to contribute today," said Seahawks head coach Patrick Cooney.

 

Comerford finished the afternoon with three goals and two assists while graduate student Cody LaFerriere (Brookside, N.J.) had a goal and two assists. Junior Luke Biggins (Sudbury,Mass.) notched a goal and an assist for the AMCats.

 

Salve Regina outshot Anna Maria 49-20 on the afternoon, held a 27-19 edge in ground balls, and converted on 13 of its 14 clearing attempts. Freshman Chris Connors (Garden City, N.Y.) made one save on the afternoon to even his record at 6-6 on the season. Freshman Bryan Bedard (Dracut, Mass.) recorded eight saves in defeat.

 

The Seahawks return to action next Saturday when they travel to Curry for a 1 p.m. contest. The AMCats host Roger Williams Tuesday at 4 p.m.
