Bio

Klann enters his sixth season at the helm of the Salve Regina University men's ice hockey team. In his first five seasons he has guided the Seahawks to a 70-32-7 record, back-to-back Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) regular season championships (2018, 2019), and was the 2018 National runners-up in the NCAA Tournament.

  • Zech Klann (pronounced Klon) has experienced all levels of ice hockey, from playing at prep school to being drafted fifth overall in the USHL by current Seattle Kraken (NHL) head coach Dave Hakstol.
  • Klann oversaw the best season in program history in 2018 going 22-6-2 and earning the university's first ever at-large selection to the NCAA Tournament.
  • In the 2018 tournament the Seahawks hosted a quarterfinal victory over Nichols College, and defeated Wisconsin-Stevens Point in the national semifinal before falling in double-overtime of the National Championship game in Lake Placid, N.Y. It was the closest any Salve Regina or Commonwealth Coast Conference varsity program has ever come to a national title. Klann was named coach of the year in the CCC and by the New England Hockey Writers. He was also named the National Coach of the Year by USCHO.com.
  • Klann has coached 16 All-CCC performers including three major award winners.

  • Klann has coached two (2) AHCA All-Americans and two (2) All-New England players.
  • Klann has coached 62 Academic All-Conference players, nine (9) AHCA All-American Scholars, and a CoSIDA Academic All-District honoree.
  • Played for Mike Hastings, who holds the record for coach with most wins in the USHL, and who is currently the head coach for the Division I Minnesota State Mavericks.
  • Finished his junior career as a forward for the New Hampshire Junior Monarchs, under the helm of Sean Tremblay, current general manager and head coach of the USPHL Islanders Premier Hockey Club.
  • Led the USPHL in scoring and played in the 2002 Top Prospect Tournament, where he was awarded with First Team All-Tournament honors.
  • Klann then earned a scholarship to play for the University of Massachusetts Amherst.  
    • Played in two Division I Hockey East Championships as well as an NCAA regional championship under the direction of Red Gendron, currently the head coach at the University of Maine.

    • Assistant coach with Islanders Premier Hockey Club.

Klann developed his passion for coaching after experiencing a successful career while playing for some of the most respected hockey minds in the game today. He is a motivated leader who is well respected by his players and fellow coaches. Over the past several years, Klann has had the opportunity to work with players with a variety of skill levels, from youth to current Division I athletes. He specializes in strength and conditioning, power skating, and on-ice skill development.

With a major in sports psychology, Klann creates a supportive environment for all ages, identifying players' strengths and weaknesses and helping them recognize their full potential to take their game to the next level. Having personally experienced the tough situations that hockey presents, Klann is equipped with the knowledge and understanding to guide goal-oriented athletes and their families. He is dedicated to using his experience to help young athletes aspire to their on-ice dreams.
