BIDDEFORD, Maine. – The No. 6 Salve Regina men's ice hockey team scored three goals in the second period on its way to a 3-1 victory over No. 7 University of New England on Saturday night at the Harold Alfond Forum in Biddeford, Maine.
The Nor'easters found themselves down two men in a 4-on-3 situation late in the first period. Andrew Slotnick took a pass at the blue line and fought off a defender to score a short-handed goal with 5:11 to play in the period. UNE killed off the rest of the 5-on-3 and went into the intermission with a 1-0 lead.
Salve Regina answered with goals by Evan Schmidbauer and Nick Cry midway through the second period. Paul Boutoussov made the score 3-1 with a goal with 2:53 to play in the frame.
Despite four power-play opportunities and an 18-5 advantage in shots, the Nor'easters were unable to get on the board in the third period. UNE was 0-for-7 on extra-man situations in the game while Salve Regina went 0-for-6 on the powerplay.
Blake Wojtala made 34 saves for the visitors while Ben Churchfield turned away 26 shots. Overall, UNE outshot the Seahawks 35-29.
Salve Regina (1-1-0, 1-1-0 CCC) returns to the ice on Friday, November 9 when it hosts Curry College in another Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) matchup.
